The entire book is depressing and when I thought life was going to turn around Dave something gets in his way. We follow two different stories in this book, that end up being intertwined, but not in a way you think it would be.

Arthur and Jake are the sons of a farmer in the mid-1930s, when life is tough and another world war is looming. Lawson transported me into a place that I know does not exist by taking me deep down into the story of a family whose fate is inexorable and universal. In an almost hypnotic way, Paul Hecht's voice and narration talents brings the individuals to life drawing you in like a fish on a line. The game consists of standing opposite each other some distance and throwing a large hunting knife as close to the other’s bare foot as possible without hitting it.They include growing up, friendship, love, adultery, sibling rivalry, war, guilt, responsibility, choices in life, and farming. Taut With Apprehension, Surprising Us With Moments Of Tenderness And Humour, The Other Side Of The Bridge Is A Compelling, Humane And Vividly Evoked Novel With An Irresistible Emotional Undertow. The description of farming life in northern Canada is vivid and engaging as the backdrop to the narrative around the brothers. After the fall, Arthur and Jake’s relationship is different, and the two are more consciously enemies. It only takes a few minutes in her new home to realize just what a dump it is, and how ridiculously rash her decision was.

Camron began writing to get out of attending MBA school at the time, and it proved the better decision. Ava can’t help but be drawn to Sophia’s hidden past… even though the truth could change her own life forever. It might have been me, but I just rarely felt like the story went where it should and a fair amount was not that interesting, just there to keep the story going between the authors few pivotal moments. We hear about the stoicism of parents, of angst and hopes of boys as they grow into men and the impact of World World II on this community. When life and his dream slowly converge, he might be able to see that little hope, and seeing that little light of hope begins a journey he only ever dreamed about. When Ava’s grandmother died, Ava’s life had recently been shattered, so the news that an old cottage in the small village of Iousidous in Greece was now hers came as a shock, but also a reprieve. It is told from two different viewpoints which was a smidge confusing to me at first, but it did not take long to get into the swing of the characters and their lives. At the same time, it seems the author's intent is to keep the characters and their stories almost entirely separate. As the novel opens, Ian is restless, dreams of leaving the small town of Struan, and is obsessed with Laura Dunn.

Darkness had fallen twenty minutes ago and she had no idea where she was - or where she was meant to go. The two sides of the resistance, the Nazis and the Civil War which had taken place at the end of the war were sobering. Both Dave and Kate live through many depressing things, but through these experiences their healing is taking place. While this split exists, each brother also longs for the affection and approval of the parent that they feel like they do not have.

Afterward, Arthur must run not just his family’s farm alone, but the neighbors’ farms as well, since the neighbor’s three sons (Arthur’s friends) are off fighting. Grasping at straws after tragedy strikes his family, he decides to follow a daydream that has turned into an obsession: to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge on a motorcycle on the Fourth of July.

Two brothers, Arthur and Jake Dunn, are the sons of a farmer in the mid-1930s, when life is tough and another world war is looming. It was a love affair that survived the vicissitudes of living together as husband and wife in China during the World War 2 and China's political and cultural upheavals. Arthur throws Jake from the house and forces him into his car, seriously beating Jake in the process. There was one scene in particular, that I could more or less figure out why it was in there, but didn't really seem to fit and I felt like the same objective could have been achieved in a way that fit more with the story. She enjoys such novel things as long country walks and chatting with people in the street, and her children love the freedom of village life—although she often has to ring four or five people to figure out where they’ve gone off to!

If Matt Morrison, the brilliant and adored older brother in Crow Lake, had wandered into this book, which character do you think he would have had more in common with, Ian or Pete? She has a remarkable gift for conjuring up place and people in a handful of words, a few lines of dialogue.
