Meaningful Name: His CAD is called Shido, which sounds like (and means, in Japanese) Seed. What is the only thing seeds do? They grow. Mystical White Hair: His hair is pure white, possibly due to the stress of all the surgeries he endured as kid. Awesomeness by Analysis: She has a talent for reading opponents in the middle of battle. It’s seen in her fight with Logan in the intra-school SCT, where she reads him like a book, allowing her to win. Rei's stats start out nearly across the board at the completely laughable F0. His Growth stat is S. This sets him up for pretty much exactly the sort of progression that you would expect.That is almost entirely absent here. The authors go to great lengths to make sure that the stakes of each battle are clearly laid out.

The PlotThe Ace: She enters the school with a rank of C0 and an ability (Third Eye) already having manifested. According to Rama Guest, that hasn't happened at Galens in a very, very long time. She herself later states that with that at entry, she was in the top 50 new assignees in the galaxy. An S-ranked SCT and combat veteran who retires from active duty to take on the job of Chief Combat Instructor at Galens. The number 2 freshman in the school behind Aria. He and Rei don't really see eye to eye, to put it mildly. I also don't like that the authors seem to be going for a standard 'earn the tough but fair asshole's respect' thing by the end. Rei does not need to earn his respect. And he's not tough but fair either. That said I think once he's around people who are less awful than his current friend group he'll be more palatable. The Big Guy: He's noted to be enormous, and his Mauler-type CAD is well suited for the sort of straightforward tactics Big Guys tend to use.

Promoted Fanboy: In universe. He's a huge SCT fanboy and gets to live his dream fighting in the SCTs. I was immediately drawn by the plot of Iron Fey Series. The story has a magical feel to it, and Kagawa has excelled at building the world of Iron Fey, which is amazingly new yet retaining the characteristic ‘cruel’ stroke of fey stories. Iron Fey’s plot is inspired heavily from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midnight Summer’s Dream‘ and many other fantasy classics, still it’s story seems fresh due to the concept of iron-resistant fey in it. The Writing There's combat, tons of combat, so much combat that you might be like "But Will, isn't that too much combat?" After I put up one fingerto silence your beautiful mouth, I would whisper "No. And how dare you." To make things even worse, one of the Fey, the Forgotten Queen, is raising an army to declare war against the Summer and Winter courts. Leading the army is the Iron Prince, Kierran himself, who has betrayed his own family. Thing is... I think it's a hiccup most of you will be excited for when I get to announce what it is ;)Incidentally, I enjoyed the main character's romance sub-plot. Mainly because his love interest is a cool person, I believe their chemistry together, and she does awesome things in this book with the promise of more to come in the future. TLDR: Overall I liked it a lot, good characters, interesting mechanics, interesting setting. It's only one book, but it's a really long one, longer than the first three Cradle books put together. The story isn't even close to over, but it doesn't end on a cliffhanger either. On the other hand the setting makes some of the tropes (like the scorned MC whose obvious value is unappreciated) seem out of place, I also think that taking some more space for world building to flesh out the setting a bit more would have been beneficial. Morph Weapon: His CAD Shido's unique ability, (and the second of two things that set him apart) Type Shift, lets Rei switch between entirely different types of CADs mid-battle. Oh, also, in case people don't know: Stormweaver 3: Metal Gear Metal King will get started immediately after Stormweaver 2! I know that might seem like common sense to many, but one of the reasongs Book 2 has taken so long is because I had to write The Shattered Reigns 2: A Blood of Kings between Iron Prince and this sequel, which I won't have to do for the next one!
