On the Guns side of the house, I liked the Revenant, a very Clint Eastwood-ian entity that was killed but decided not to stay dead because they still had scores to settle. So much so that I’ve already contemplated building a Pathfinder version of Tuttle Blacktail and CHDRR. Of course, they’re going to have some tech that duplicates the function of magic items, but they also have gadgets – single-use items that fill a similar role to consumables.

If you need a place to set your campaign where technology flourishes, or an NPC who would have a tech connection, this is the section of the book you’re going to lean most heavily on. And differentiating itself from DnD by moving to a more steampunk and pre-industrial culture will help it grow by further making its own path. They also prefer to let GMs manage that for their groups because these things are delicate, and many people have very diverging opinions on how it should be implemented, and instead of pleasing 1/4 of people and hurt the rest, they know that the GMs are the best at getting the best solution for their groups.

And, of course, gear- and steam-based vehicles mean exactly one thing in my mind (even if it isn’t explicit in the book): TRAINS. It is an absolute crit machine, but guns can fall flat if a character spends a day hitting but not critting.

These two components are merged using powerful magical energy to form a core of seemingly limitless arcane potential that powers an automaton. This is the lore section of the book – part history lesson, part campaign setting, part idea incubator for roll-your-own GMs. Whereas the Android from the Lost Omens Ancestry Guide is a fusion of organic and technology, Automatons are pure tech, living constructs.So far, one of my favorite things to have crafted was a water boiler/chiller out of Hot and Cold Siccatite, Fire-Forged and Frost-Forged Steel, and a magical steel plate enchanted with create water to keep the system properly filled. It’s not QUITE as epic an undertaking… maybe because magic is everywhere while technology is still a bit more of a niche thing… but it’s still a solid book that adds a lot of new content to the Second Edition world (some of which will be familiar to First Edition ex-pats). Can accomplish similar results with elementals and other fun stuff but I'm hoping there will be a ton of special materials and rules for crafting all manner of fun devices! They also have both mundane and exotic wheelchairs, because there’s been a sense in the community that players with disabilities still ought to be able to see themselves as heroes and play heroic versions of themselves as well.
