The iPhone 15 Pro Max stretches into new telephoto territory with its tetraprism design and 5x (120mm equivalent) reach. I also worry that it might follow the form of the other f4 "S" lenses and have a lock and extending barrel which is something I'd rather not see. In one case -the hyper-focusing on one single suject- and in the other one - the attempt to take a 360o picture - we're talking here of sorts of specialization in photography that have both their raison-d'etre but are second to main considerations: the quickness, the sharpness, the stabilization, the flare issue, the reliability in the long term of one lens.

Nikon claims that the new AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR III will give you an extra 5 stops shutter speed. When a lens is this good, there's not much to say: at the long distances for which you use a long lens, this lens is ultrasharp even wide open, all the way out to the corners on a 36 MP D800E. for shooting 35mm; with digital's clean ultra-high ISOs, f/4 is more than enough to shoot hand-held in any light.

Slimmer, lighter, and smaller in all dimensions, the new 70-200mm F4 is a genuinely portable optic, and in terms of handling, an ideal companion for one of Nikon's smaller FX DSLRs, like the D800/E or recently-announced D600. is about twice heavier than the f/4 version, so weight could have been the reason for better sharpness in my case. Performance will be very good and you could always replace it with the Z version in 18 months or so.

On a D600, focusing feels all but instant (despite the insistence of Nikon reps that the sample we used was 'unfinished') and the zoom action is smooth and well-damped. I couldn’t find any signs of chromatic aberration, lateral or longitudinal, which is impressive considering the number of chrome car parts in the sun I shot whilst in Havana. Likewise, edge of day in the wilds can force you to push your ISO values up because f/4 just isn’t going to hold high shutter speeds at dawn or dusk.As a result of this test, I definitely wouldn’t use the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR uncorrected for architecture or for any other application where keeping straight lines straight is important, i. We've been using a full production version of this 120 fps sports camera, to see what you gain (and, perhaps, lose). But, this is much less of a problem with larger lenses, and I wouldn't think it would be nearly as much of an issue with the 70-200.

I think Nikon didn't start all that well with the focusing of F mount lenses with the first Z cameras and many F-mount lenses tend to jitter when focusing in lower light. Again, I won’t be able to provide any numbers here and it is hard to say how much better it is – probably between half a stop to a full stop (depending on the situation) is a good guess. I've always found it interesting that the 70-200 is such a popular lens when the 80-200 is almost the same focal length.Weight and bulk: the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR is narrower, shorter and 690 gr lighter than the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2. Autofocus speed of the 70-200mm f/4G VR is excellent, I would say very close to the AF motor on the 70-200mm f/2.
