In Thin Air, the main character was racist and arrogant, and despite it fitting for the time, it was a little off-putting. The overarching religion of the time is controlling and powerful, with locals attending the ornate medieval St Guthlaf's church, with its ornate demons and fallen angels. She saves and befriends a magpie, hence the cover, and she strikes up a friendship with the handsome gardener, someone below her station as far as her father is concerned.

Loved reading that book and can imagine (like stated in the book) that it could easily be turned into a major movie. When Maud's mother dies in childbirth and she's left alone with her strict, disciplinarian father, Maud's isolation drives her to her father's study, where she happens upon his diary. Stearne spends the rest of his life in an asylum, creating three Hieronymus Bosch-esque paintings full of “tiny malevolent faces”. All the characters were well drawn, even the misty, marshy Suffolk fens felt like a dark and foreboding character.A very enjoyable mystery, a story of madness and delusion: if you, like me, love this genre, I absolutely suggest you give it a try! If it weren't for the occasional adult subject matter (sex/demon possession), one would think this was written for 13-year olds. History, religion, folklore, and fear all meet in Wake’s End in a story that is complexly woven, brilliantly structured, and completely engrossing. His obsession with Alice Pyett is also inherently contradictory, given that he idolises a female mystic and even likens her struggle to his own.

Michelle Paver – Creator of Legends

His wife is French, originally, and plays along to the extend of allowing him to take her again and again despite her body slowly but surely giving up. The feeling of profound menace runs throughout and was responsible for creating a tense and unforgettable tale. But then she secretly begins reading his diaries — as do we alongside her — and realises what a monster he is, particularly in his contempt for women. Helped by sneaking in to her father’s study and reading his personal notebook (diary) - she learns many things, some that she struggles to understand! In Edwardian Suffolk, a manor house stands alone in a lost corner of the Fens: a glinting wilderness of water whose whispering reeds guard ancient secrets. For others that are looking for a spooky October read-- this story has no chilling or scary moments!
