In 2010, fifty members of the National Youth Music Theatre staged a production at the Village Underground as part of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebrations in London. With Prince absorbed in staging the mammoth production, Lansbury and Cariou were left largely to their own when it came to developing their characters. We had brick walls which were kind of a dull, muted red color which would look flat, plain and not very rich, so we ended up doing a lot of washes over top of it to make it catch light and bounce light back to the audience. Because the tone of the show is so dirty with a gritty London vibe, then I don't think it will matter too much. Never before or later in his work did Sondheim utilize music in such an exhaustive capacity to further the purposes of the drama. The main character, Sweeney Todd, depicts an obsessed madman who has been through a terrifying time in prison and is hardened to life.

Instead, the characters' "emotional and psychological depths" are examined, so that Sweeney Todd is understood as a victim as well as a perpetrator in the "great black pit" of humanity. The most recent version of this story is Tim Burton’s 2007 musical film “ Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street“, which is an adaptation of the Broadway musical. Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster are set to star as Todd and Lovett for a 12 week limited run starting February 9. Sondheim has often said that his Sweeney Todd was about obsession – and close friends seemed to instinctually agree. As Todd falls dead and Toby drops the razor, Anthony, Johanna and some constables break into the bakehouse.

The fabric this dress is made of looks lush and expensive, which would be accurate considering that her adoptive care-giver is a well-known judge.
