Join Stella Starflake Pearl and her three fellow explorers as they trek across the snowy Icelands and come face-to-face with frost fairies, snow queens, outlaw hideouts, unicorns, pygmy dinosaurs and carnivorous cabbages . I've come to love all these characters and can't wait to journey further with them on their next adventures. For some years these ranged from dolphin trainer to animal shelter vet but then, at fifteen, she had an epiphany involving John and Robert Kennedy and decided to become a lawyer instead.

Gradually No 13 acquires a friend, a name – Arthur – a backbone, and a mission: to discover his long-lost home. Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.

I enjoyed the first installment immensely (Krysta did not, and you can read her review here), and my assessment of The Forbidden Expedition is nearly the same.

The next book would have been one of my most anticipated of next year regardless of this ending, but now I can’t wait even more! Here are some of our favourite stories that happen to have a single dad, including some adoptive dads, in the background. Now she happily dwells in an entirely make-believe world of blood, death, madness, murder and mayhem. Just as in the prior series instalment, this was infused with a hefty dose of feminism and was an inclusive read that preached the dangers of hastily made judgements and acceptance of others' differences.

Our bonds of love and friendship with other people are not always as simple or as straightforward as we would like them to be, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth it, warts and all. It’s a great pity that we all spend so much time trying to be exactly the same when, in fact, we should be celebrating those things that make us different and uniquely ourselves. We follow Stella and her new friends on an adventure to the infamous Witch Mountain, where few other explorers dare to tread. Above all however, it’s a novel for having fun, exploring, going on one brilliant adventure and experiencing the freedom and fun that goes with that. The character explore the Icelands because the series is the “Polar Bear Explorers Club,” but there are such tantalizing hints about the other clubs and climates that I want to know more. The idea is that children read the class novel (The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club) daily during reading time. Middle-years books are an excellent place to introduce the idea that life can be quite barbaric; Mulligan piles on the peril. This second book is sadly a bit of a disappointment: the story is not bad, far from it, the world is still interesting but the book has nothing really new to offer.

If you’re looking for a good middle grade fantasy series with fun quests and lots of imagination, these might be the books for you. Shay is an intelligent boy who lovingly cares for the wolves and Ethan is a magician in progress who acts tougher than he really is. Parents are not usually the focus of books for children – they’re not the ones having the adventures, after all! Facing discrimination does help Stella confront some of her own biases, and of course this is an important theme, but part of me also hope that every single book in the series won’t be about some newly revealed reason that other characters unfairly hate Stella. The other guided reading sessions (Tues, Wed, Thurs) explore various texts linked to the ‘Biomes Geography Theme’.
