Fujifilm originally made Superia film in every ASA from 100 all the way to 1600, but these have slowly been sunsetted.

Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia 200 Print Film - PhotographyReview Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia 200 Print Film - PhotographyReview

My gaze drifted back out the window to the silhouettes of strip malls, foreclosed homes, and the occasional squad car slipping past. Ostensibly billed as a portrait film, I’ve found it to be one of my favorites for general purpose shooting. I have been using camera’s since my childhood and thus started out with different types of slide and color negative film and even have used Kodak X-Tri black and white film push-processed in Promicrol developer long before switching to digital cameras.Unfortunately the film isn’t being sold anymore but has gotten replaced with “Fujifilm 400” which is believed to be Kodak made film. A USA market variant of Superia X-tra 400 launched 2005 (possibly to compete with Kodaks High Definition 400 film) with similar characteristics to X-tra 400 including sigma fine grain and 4th colour layer but adding newly developed 'Fine Color Film Technology' - a technology which realizes natural and smooth gradation that captures precise detail over a wide exposure range with brilliant color maintained. That shouldn’t matter too much as these films were designed to be extremely similar at different speeds. After this, I’d probably consider using Superia for some of those less important projects that still need to look good! Dublin-based photographer, YouTuber, and all-round analogue enthusiast Alex Doran is back to talk to us about shooting with the LomoChrome Turquoise film using a variety of different cameras and ISO speeds.

Why Fujifilm Superia 400 Should be Every Shooters First Film Why Fujifilm Superia 400 Should be Every Shooters First Film

It also has the benefit that it is designed to work in small zoom compacts as these can have lower spec glass. I think that this film can capture more than 9 stops, provided that the negatives are scanned with something like PrimeFilm XAs . Outside of work, he has a personal passion for travel and nature photography, with a devotion to sustainability and environmental causes. Plenty of overexposure does wonders for this film, perhaps try shooting it at 320 or 200 and see what happens? There's a real cost to operating and maintaining this site, not to mention all the time that I pour into it.I don’t know if Classic Negative is “true to life” as it has a certain color shift (that I really like). For these reasons, a good rule may be to meter for the shadows of a shot and only over-expose by a single stop. Photography was a new friend, so new that I’d only developed a few rolls- nothing special, just some cheap film.

The only thing that I think I can glean from these pictures is that the Superia may have a little more saturation in the magentas (the pink flowers) and possibly a little more green.

Literally this morning I posted in a local Fuji X group asking about a Superia/Natura 1600 recipe, only to be disappointed by google to discover that people have been looking since 2018. One of the things that we’ve noticed and that we’re thrilled about is the increased durability of the ZX plate and not having to worry about those minor scratches and dings, and also just the longevity of the plate itself. All of this makes sense since, Superia was produced to be consumer-grade, for the most part, people only really had 35mm cameras so there wasn’t much point in producing medium or large format film. I guess what I’m saying is that I think Fuji Superia is a great alternative when you don’t need the absolute best. While 800 might seem like an odd ISO, not quite high-speed but also not really intended for super-smooth images with no grain, I can report that the visible grain for both Venus and Superia was small enough to not be noticeable or distracting.Firstly, the film being expired and having been left in the camera for an extended period didn’t seem to have impacted the quality.
