Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. However, almost immediately after writing this post, I booked in a few more weddings so I found it impossible to sell the 56mm; it remains with me to this day and I promise that I’ll try shoot with it more on a day to day basis. Not only am I writing this for the benefit of others considering purchasing this lens but also for myself.The transitions from sharp to out of focus areas are smooth and extremely pleasing, as seen in many sample images of this review.

I had no real issues with the first version of this lens regarding focus speed, but I know that that, along with sharpness wide open, is what most people are interested in with the new version. X Series interchangeable lens cameras are equipped with Film Simulation modes, which have been developed using Fujifilm’s knowledge from 80 years of manufacturing to deliver film-like colors and tones. Fujifilm have paid close attention to this aspect of lens use, employing a 11-segment diaphragm with rounded blades for some very pleasing bokeh. The focus peaking, magnified assistance and innovative split screen options on the XT1 meant it was easy to nail the focus manually, even with close subjects at f1. Both the focus and aperture rings are metal, plus metal is also used on the exterior of the lens body for a high-quality finish.

Mounted on an X-series body it delivers equivalent coverage of 84mm, which is both flattering for portrait photography and also useful for capturing tighter views than a standard lens. Additionally, thanks to the combination of two extra-low dispersion lens elements and three cemented lens elements, chromatic aberrations are greatly reduced.
