I feel it is important to be led by the level of interest from the child, sometimes really young ones are keen to have a go, but some children aren’t ready till a bit later on. It provides a range of additional pieces, puzzles and activities for students from around the age of five. Beginner piano books can somewhat mitigate this, by providing a more engaging and more interesting way to learn piano concepts. This is something I’m sure will resonate with a lot of teachers reading this; the excuse that “ you will need it to develop your technique so you become a better pianist” doesn’t usually fly with five year old kids who want to play the theme from “Frozen” or something.

The notes for each piece feature teaching ideas relating to three areas of learning: musical context, technical challenges, and performance and interpretation. For the first time, the recordings are available as audio downloads, accessible via unique download codes included in each book. since I learnt how to play the piano by ear (was not trained by anyone), I have been pretty clueless on how to teach him in a way that is engaging and fun! The books are designed to introduce young children (from the age of around five) to the piano and music-making through ‘fun activities, rhymes, songs and pieces.Depending on the age and attention span of your child or the child you are teaching, to make it easier this lesson can be broken up into two sections which introduces C-D-E-F first, and then G-A-B the next time. Suitable for children aged 5 years and over, this book facilitates a seamless transition from pre-stave reading onto stave reading, leading effortlessly into the highly acclaimed Get Set! Whilst there are many such early-stage piano tutor books on the market, there are few which place as such a strong emphasis on the development of musicianship as these do. There is enough material in this series to keep a student occupied for many, many lessons; right from a total beginner level through to late beginner and beyond. I’ve referred to the prep course here, however, there are four separate series for beginners produced by Alfred.

There’s a lot to worry about when choosing the best beginner piano book for your students, as each book contains different materials, and sometimes it may feel like your students may be missing out on vital information that might not be in the book you’ve chosen. And of course, you then have issues with your student having to remember to bring four books to their lesson as opposed to just one, which can get annoying when they forget more than once. The tried and tested progression guides beginners from their very first lesson through to Grade 1 level.

It’s November 2022 and as we head into Christmas (yes, it’s coming) we want to throw another sample challenge competition. The fourth instrument in the Pianobook Artists lineup is an evolution of one of Hunter Rogerson’s best sample libraries on the Pianobook Site- The Wildmother’s Dulcimer.

I like how this particular book from John Thompson does away with this, and focuses on associating the notes on the keyboard with notes on the stave right from the outset.

This all-in-one keyboard and music book is the perfect introduction to reading and playing music--it even sounds like a real piano. So, thank you for your work, for inspiration and I am looking forward to next tips and ideas for my children. It does a very good job of explaining concepts such as sight-reading and theory, and putting them into practice by providing good exercises to practice what the student has learned.
