Once the most popular whiskey purchased, it fell from grace due to what can be mildly put as a series of unfortunate events, resulting in the closing of all but two distilleries by the 1980s. Produced in Northern Ireland with organic wheat spirit, the distillation also includes local sweet gale. Founded and run by brothers-in-law, Brian and Jim Nash, the Wild Atlantic Distillery was inspired by the Porcupine Bank, a natural wonder located 120 miles off the west coast of Ireland. Rudd, the six-botanical spirit took two years to develop with Dr David Clutton – a man who holds a PhD in gin (yep, that exists).

We’re big fans of this organic iteration from Hernö, a boutiquey Swedish distillery that has a cabinet full of awards for gin-making. Please look out for a sign post for The Boatyard Distillery, we are located approximately 15 minutes drive from Enniskillen on the right hand side of the Shore road on the water side. On top of this, there’s also a gin school experience where visitors can learn about recipe development, the necessary botanical ingredients, the distilling process and even how to design their own labels.

The secret, in our opinion, is in the tart pomegranate and blood orange notes on the palate: the perfect partner for the cherried orange flavours found in the popular Campari-based cocktail. It’s a difficult line to tread: how do you imbue a gin with sense of place, while still making sure it tastes like gin (that is, like juniper)? BOATYARD GIN står på alle måder frem – med sin fyldige smag og smukke flaske kan og må den ikke overses. Floral orange blossom, coriander and spicy cardamom notes show first; almond sweetness and more spice follows on, with a hint of violet. We’ve rounded up nine of the most unique distilleries, which are raising the profile of Northern Ireland as a key spirit-producing region, offering tours, tastings and an education in local culture and Northern Irish history.

Juniper-forward on the initial sips, a slow savour reveals some of the 20-odd unique botanicals: finger lime, macadamia and raspberry included. Made in small batches in Dorset, Conker has a real sense of place – give it a taste and after the initial hit of juniper fades away, in creeps a herbaceous note of wild gorse; a generous, fruity richness from elderberry; and a salty lick of marsh samphire.Destilleriet ligger smukt ud til Lower Lough Erne Søen og skulle efter sigende klart være et besøg værd. Now, it’s newest addition to the family, Flora Adora, has an added wave of flavour, thanks to its infusion of a secret selection of sweet flowers. The result is bags of juniper flavour that, when paired with the punchy abv, make a full-bodied gin that rounds out beautifully when blended with richer tonics. Some are technical: the balance of botanicals, the intensity and complexity of the flavours, the length of the finish. The ‘double’ in Boatyard Double Gin refers to our distillation process and a purist’s approach of placing juniper at both the start and end of the process.
