Description

As a premium gaming monitor, the Predator X35 lets you control every aspect of how the panel behaves, including activating features like Dark Boost (a contrast-enhancing tool useful for multiplayer gamers), turning on one of six different hardware-based crosshairs, sending the response time into overdrive, fine-tuning the color profile, and more. We were quite impressed with the control that you will have over the contrast/brightness, as well as the eight featured gaming modes that you can choose from depending on the title that you are playing. First and foremost, it is highlighted by a similar design given the 1900R curvature display and the impressive 3440x1440p resolution. Since most games support only 8-bit color and the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit color isn’t all that obvious in games, you’ll probably find 3440×1440 200Hz with 8-bit full color to work best.

Previously at PCMag, I was a hardware analyst benchmarking and reviewing consumer gadgets and PC hardware such as desktop processors, GPUs, monitors, and internal storage. HDR measurements were made using this YouTube HDR brightness test video, running full screen at ‘1440p HDR’ on Google Chrome. We didn’t really find the minor ‘VA glow’ or ‘black crush’ detracted from the atmospheric look of this title and felt the monitor presented things nicely in terms of contrast. The blue colour channel is reduced somewhat, reducing blue light output from the monitor by a moderate amount. We found that turning up the brightness made the picture pop even more without becoming fatiguing to look at.pounds, the display is easily the heaviest Predator monitor to date, but given the amount of features packed inside, that's to be expected (it takes a lot of hardware under the hood to run an HDR 1000 screen at 200Hz). The monitor also offers a selection of ‘Blue Light’ LBL settings, with varying effectiveness from ‘50%’ (highest reduction) to ‘80%’ (weakest reduction). While the Acer Predator X35 was an exciting monitor back when it was released, there are much better alternatives available today. Lagom’s tests for viewing angle help explore the idea of colour consistency and viewing angle performance. Regardless, gameplay on this monitor is breathtaking and something that you may have only experienced on an LG OLED TV.

Another factor affecting darker areas was ‘VA glow’, a slight lightening towards the sides of the screen and particularly the bottom. Turning on the zone dimming means the backlight is completely off when a 0% signal pattern is displayed making measurements impossible. Whether viewing photos in Windows or playing a game with this FALD backlight, the SDR image was far beyond what’s possible from a monitor with an edge-array backlight. Also note that they have a spool-down time after the monitor switches off, so will remain running for a while as the monitor cools down. This is a hangover from the Acer X27, which uses a similar OSD and did allow this setting to be altered.

I will confirm the concern that Late_Apex stated regarding that there are existing issues with this particular panel. It will cost you an arm and a leg, but if you've got the limbs to spare, there's no better PC gaming experience to be had, earning the Acer an Editors' Choice pick. Given the measured gamma and measured gamut with the sRGB emulation mode (explored later), we wouldn’t put too much weight on “accurate out of the box colour performance” within the sRGB colour space for this model, however. Not to mention, there are more than 512 dimming settings, as well as an RGB light-sense mode in case you want to create a more attractive environment. The screen has an anti-glare matte coating, which effectively eliminates reflections and a 1800R curvature, which further improves the immersion.
