Description

Many (many) years later, Addie, a young, autistic girl, finds out about the witch trials and starts a campaign to set up a monument in their town to honour the women that were killed and tortured simply for being different. When she discovers what happened to women in her community who were believed to be witches in a bygone age, she is determined that a memorial will be made to recognise this. A middle grade book about an young 11 year old autistic girl - Addie - who lives in a small town in Scotland near Edinburgh.

This booklist aims to provide a range of children's and teens' books that feature characters who are autistic, or who have Autistic Spectrum Conditions. After Addie’s parents learn what she put their daughters through, they file a complaint against her (with the implication that she’ll be investigated for discrimination) and Addie is put in a different class.BOOK OF THE MONTH - A heart-warming and hilarious story told in 25 chapters, perfect for the countdown to Christmas. The more information Addie learns about the alleged witches leads her to believe that they may have been autistic like her, prompting her to start a campaign for the village to put up a memorial to the Juniper witches. When she learns about the innocent women who lost their lives during the witch trials centuries before, she makes it her mission to honour and memorialise them. She’s horrified that innocent people, including women from her own area, were persecuted, executed, then forgotten by society. Addie is an extremely relatable main character, even for me at 27 years old, and it gave me so much strength to see how she stood up for herself and dealt with her teacher's and classmate's bullying.

Sadece hala tüm kitaplarında neden "ç" harfinin yer almadığı, diğer harflere göre büyük durduğu bir font kullanıyorlar onu anlamıyorum. Many students might feel seen, others will learn to show kindness and compassion and to not underestimate someone simply because they are different to you. The result is a story that can help broaden the understanding of people like Addie (or Greta Thunburg), whose differences can serve as their strengths.

It centres on 11-year-old Addie who lives in a village community close to Edinburgh, it’s a new school year and she’s suddenly confronted with a relentlessly mocking teacher and targeted by bullies intent on making life miserable. Like Addie, McNicoll had a childhood fascination with sharks and witches and both characters are autistic like McNicoll herself. Although she is grossly misunderstood, and mistreated, by her homeroom teacher, Addie finds comfort in the school library and support from the school librarian, as well as her family. A novel which encourages empathy and challenges perceptions by a debut author who is herself neurodivergent.

The Three Faces of Eve: The Darrow sisters can be seen to each fill in for one of the archetypes of the triad, with Addie as the child or the most innocent of the sisters, Nina as the more socially outgoing and fashionable, and Keedie as the wise and responsible one. This book hit home for me in ways I did not in any sense expect and with which I am still unable to fully reckon. I can read stories like this, I can put stories like this into my children's hands (one of whom is neurodivergent) and I can try to gain an insight into their world.

Murphy told us about the witch trials that happened centuries ago right here in Juniper, I can’t stop thinking about them. Ik zou dit enorm aanraden aan iedereen die autistisch is en aan iedereen die autistische mensen graag beter wil begrijpen.
