Description

Fajne ilustracje, śmieszna, odjechana historyjka (w zgrabnym przekładzie), nie nudzi nawet po entym czytaniu, a mimochodem zaznajamia z liczbami, z mnożeniem i z kalendarzem. That's especially true for the family in "365 Penguins", who find a penguin mysteriously delivered to their door for every day of the year. Steve Light’s masterful pen-and-ink illustrations, decorated with meticulous splashes of colour, elevate this counting book (numbers 1-20) to new heights - with brilliant flashes of humour.

And there are great messages about overpopulation and global warming, about the necessity to take proper care of companion animals, and even a bit of a mystery that’s solved in a hilarious way by the end of the book. This great introduction to the concept of odd and even numbers is supplemented by odd fun facts, number games, and the art! Watch the animals that have adapted to this ever-changing environment as they hunt for food or play in the sun, and learn how the marsh grass survives even when it is covered by salt water twice a day. Black, white (of course), orange, and blue made up the palette used, so there were no in-your-face, eye-poppingly bright colors.Accompany Mr Wolf as he goes about his daily routine from breakfast to bedtime - and get to know the real Mr Wolf!

Again the book asks the reader how many penguins this is, and again the answer is both at the bottom of the page upside down and given as answer+1 on the next page.

There are many areas this book can relate to, for example, children can create penguins or draw them for Art and Design. For some students they may never have seen the year as a whole but rather as a calendar page at a time. A calendar presented this way provides students with an image of the whole so that you can begin to engage them in conversations about the fractions of a year. Sir Cumference and Lady Di planned a surprise birthday party for King Arthur, but they didn t expect so many guests to show up.

As I finished it, I couldn't help feeling that I was meant to find it far more amusing then I did, especially given how entertaining I found their other book. The hairstyle is the same, the glasses are the same, and what is even more creepy, the clothing is the same. In a large format and with lots of opportunities for counting, "365 Penguins" is sure to become a perennial wintertime favourite. Needless to say, this involves the family in all sorts of problems - how does one care for so many penguins? The book discusses the problems the family experiences, including feeding and housing penguins, and in Summer, heat (which the penguins don't like), noise and the smell. Here, the black-and-white penguins make a cheerful contrast to the orange people, blue furniture and — often — the chaotic mischief the penguins get up to.
