Before cleaning, the juicer can be rinsed out by filling the juicing unit with water and letting the motor run. This helps to pre-clean the juicing screw and the squeezing chamber. Cleaning the Avance HR1922 is made easy because of the pre-clean rinsing function. By pouring water into the hollow plunger and turning the juicer on setting 2, you can rinse out the juicer lid, the steel blades and the micro-mesh filter. I have used many different juicers over the years and to a unit, they have either disappointed in terms of performance or failed due to craftsmenship. Compact, but long and narrow in shape, with its feed tube protruding, the Philips HR1889 Viva looks similar to many other smaller masticating machines. However, the citrus fruit resulted in a lot of juice, with only a light layer of foam. The use of the fibre filter resulted in a juice that was quite thin, with only a little pulp. The amount of ejected pulp was minimal in relation to the amount of fruit and only slightly moist, while the drink itself was intensely citrusy and refreshing. Note that the machine isn’t terribly noisy in operation, unlike loud centrifugal juicers, and it’s possible to have a conversation while it’s doing its thing.

This proved slightly better, resulting in double the yield, but there was still an episode of wobbling. In fact, I had to turn the machine off and on again before it settled. As recommended in the instructions, I alternated juicing leafy greens with hard fruits, processing apples in-between. Although the resulting juice was clear of any kale stalks, I found some apple peel in there – a further sign of the disturbance caused. I got this juicer for a few reasons. For one, I work in the juicing equipment business, so I know a thing or two about it and two, I was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I want to start treating it with juicing before beginning medications. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a masticating juicer that utilizes something similar to an auger to slice the products into little pieces and crush them as they pass further along the auger. Based on the yields I got, I would say it is mediocre. Storage is fantastic, the electrical wire wraps nicely and neatly into a channel in the base of the juice, effectively hiding it and all the containers fit neatly into each other, meaning no stray pieces to also find homes for when storing. Cleaning brush We found juicers that came with a cleaning brush were much easier to clean, as they can reach into nooks and crannies to remove small bits of pulp.An additional advantage of a slow juicer is that you can put whole fruit into the machine. The juicer will extract the juice directly into the container. The pomace (skins, pulp, seeds, and stems) goes to a separate container. Without the right supporting literature, it can be easy to lose interest in a new kitchen gadget, but the Avance has that covered. Easy to use, the auger takes down most ingredients with ease, meaning you can juice just about anything. (I still have not tried nuts).

The Avance HR1922 is also dishwasher-safe – although after the pre-clean rinse you’ll unlikely need to use it.Anti-drip spout The spout should stop any remaining juice inside the machine from dripping onto your worktop after you've finished juicing. Look out for a drip-stop spout – this works by flipping upwards and tends to be the most effective. This is in contrast to some of the bigger machines, such as the Sage Big Squeeze or the Kuvings EVO820 Evolution Cold Press, which come with more sizeable jugs that require greater room during the juicing process.

Philips Avance MicroMasticating Juicer HR1947 Review

We sieved each juice to measure how smooth it was, and timed how fast we could make juice with each machine. In the world of effective slow juicers, the Philips HR1889 Viva Collection is a relatively affordable option. It may not be the best at processing hard fruits/vegetables – such as carrots – but it excels at leafy greens and soft fruit. We ranked juicers on how noisy they were. While all juicers will make some noise, the best ones were much quieter than others. We found the best juicer machines to be a breeze to use, with wide chutes to put whole apples and oranges down.

However, if you’re particularly interested in juicing leafy greens, you’d be better off with the Philips Avance MicroMasticating Juicer HR1947. And for those looking for more frills, the similarly priced Sage Nutri Juicer Plus comes with a puree extractor, while the Panasonic MJ-L500 Slow Juicer has a frozen dessert function. Verdict Six medium carrots on setting “2” yielded 400ml of juice, while two Granny Smith apples added just under 160ml. I started by making the ‘Green Eyecatcher’ with cucumber, spinach, water and honey. The feed tube was quite narrow, so the cucumber had to be halved to fit in the chute; even then, pushing it through required some effort. It produced a good amount of juice and minimal, relatively dry pulp. Similarly, the spinach went through well, leaving little residue inside the juicing unit – although this may have been a result of the water washing it through to finish. I achieved excellent results juicing leafy greens, with a 100g of standard shredded supermarket kale producing 70ml of juice. There was a tiny bit of sediment, but this wasn’t particularly noticeable when mixed into the juice. There is a small decanter, to collect the juice, provided with measurements denoted on the side should you want or need that sort of thing. s The decanter also has a snap on cover and the discharge spout on the juicer is a wonderful pivot hinge design that snaps tightly closed to stop juice flow instantly. No drips. I started by making a double portion of the Farmers’ Market juice from the recipe booklet, which contains strawberries, apples, carrots and some cucumber.
