In November 2012 captive Tasmanian devils were introduced to the island and are cared for by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service staff who live on the island. These devils form part of the " insurance population" of devils unaffected by the devil facial tumour disease that is sweeping through mainland Tasmania's devil population. [14] Tasmanian devils are sometimes seen by visitors. [15] [16] There is some evidence that the devils are impacting on the bird life of the island. [17] A population of little penguins that numbered 3,000 breeding pairs before the introduction has since disappeared completely from the island. [18] Marine habitats [ edit ] Maria Island National Park is a haven for birdlife, with more than 125 different kinds of birds living here. The literal wall of fossils down at the beach is fascinating to see, and there’s an information board there too so you can learn more about the geology of the place. The marine section of the national park protects a representative area of Tasmanian East Coast marine habitat, and has significantly larger individuals and populations of key marine species than surrounding waters. This area is one of the most intensively studied marine protected areas in Australia and is popular with divers. The marine section of the park extends from an unnamed point north-east of Bishop and Clerk, westwards to Cape Boullanger and then southwards as far as Return Point. The marine boundary's definition varies, but it is never more than 1km from Maria Island's low water mark.

Most people take a day trip to Maria Island (pronounced “Ma-rye-ah”), but we decided to leave Marlee on the mainland, take our camping gear and spend 3 days, 2 nights exploring as much as we could there. The most intact example of a convict probation station in Australia presents an array of convict-era buildings. These buildings sit beside the evocative reminders of an attempt to industrialise the island at the end of the 19th century. Wildlife Nash, Michael (2003). Walk to a date with prehistory, making the circuit from Darlington to these globally significant cliffs containing extensive, 300-million-year-old marine fossils (90min-2hr 30min, 4.5km). One of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks. Painted Cliffs Tasmanians pronounce the name / m ə ˈ r aɪ ə/ mə- RY-ə, as did the early British settlers but the original pronunciation was / m ə ˈ r iː ə/ mə- REE-ə. The island was named in 1642 by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman after Maria van Diemen (née van Aelst), wife of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in Batavia. The island was known as Maria's Isle in the early 19th century. [3]Built in 1844 and one of the oldest buildings of its type in Australia, the Oast House is also a short walk from Darlington. You may spot some wombats, forester kangaroos and wallabies along the way so keep an eye out. As you are walking down the road you will also see Howell’s Cottage, which is a cottage that was built in 1924. This Maria Island walk is not for everyone as it is challenging, but if you are comfortable with heights and have decent fitness you will be fine. These two small islets situated just a short distance from the south-eastern coast of Saint Lucia, have never, as far as we know, been occupied by humans. They are, however, the home of two reptiles found nowhere else in the world and also a nesting place for many of the sea birds that visit our shores.

Convict history is everywhere on Maria Island, and you’ll notice this as soon as you get off the ferry. Maria Island takes the form of a figure-eight, with the northern section of the island significantly larger than the southern. Both parts of the island have quite rugged relief and they are joined by a tombolo about 3 kilometres (1.9mi) long known as McRaes Isthmus. The highest point, Mount Maria, is in the northern part of the island and stands 711 metres (2,333ft) above sea level. Maria Island has been separated from nearby mainland Tasmania for some 3-4 thousand years. [11] Flora and fauna [ edit ] In 2012, rangers released 28 healthy devils on Maria Island so they could thrive and repopulate without risk of the cancer. It’s actually one of the reasons that makes Maria Island so fantastic to visit, as it’s peaceful for both animals and humans alike.a b c Rowlett, Russ. "Lighthouses of Mexico: Northwest Coast". The Lighthouse Directory. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Retrieved 2018-08-07. The island’s toughest challenge on foot is its highest peak. Rising 711m above the sea, Mount Maria peers down onto McRaes Isthmus and along Tasmania’s east coast. From Darlington, the 16km walk will take about 8hr. Guided walks The first European to encounter the islands was Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, a cousin of Hernán Cortés in 1532, who gave them the name Islas Magdalenas. He found no evidence of prior habitation by the Native Americans.
