You will need the Audio Pro Control App to have full functionality, linking your speakers, controlling where music is playing, and connecting them to a wireless streaming service. Yes, I feel natural is a great way to describe the C5A. Bass can hit hard when required but is not overbearing, and it’s actually very clean in the response. This is a more refined tuning than I have seen from makers like Sony and Harmon Kardon, who tend to bloom the low end to compensate for the small size. Audio Pro refrained from that, and to myself, as a hobbyist, I felt it was very accurate and allowed more spacing to be shown in the midrange frequencies. This range of speakers has always been blessed with straightforward musicality, but as part of a multi-room system the range of tasks the Addon C5 is asked to perform is likely to be wider. Talk radio and podcasts are on the menu, perhaps even services as an upgrade to TV speakers.

Audio Pro Addon C5A review | What Hi-Fi?

Sonos is rumoured to be working on a pair of wireless headphones, so who knows, there might be less to separate these two brands in future... The functionality of multi-room is aided with a custom-made app, curated in-house by Audio Pro themselves: Audio Pro Multi-room; somewhat self-explanatorily.

Have a speaker in every room and play to one or all at the same time, listen where you want and how you want. Enjoy high quality streaming or play music from your computer: the choice is yours. It's a combination of factors. Sonos has been in the game for a long time, so it's built up a reputation. Its ecosystem is one of the most comprehensive out there, with all the main streaming apps and services covered, and an 'everything just works' approach.

Listening to Apple Music’s Dolby Atmos version of The 1 by Taylor Swift, the vocals hold a wonderful clarity and warmth. Really pushing it with SBTRKT’s Trials Of The Past in Apple Lossless quality, the speaker delivers equally precise audio and avoids falling victim to sibilance, which is a common issue we encounter playing the song on speakers this price. The new HomePod has boundless energy; its enthusiasm is infectious, its rhythmic drive always exciting and engaging. In front of the handle is the control panel. The panel is well laid out and provides users with additional functionality beyond the App that we will discuss in the next section. Centrally located, you find the volume up and down toggle switch to the left power, source, play/pause, and pairing. On the right are buttons numbered 1-4, which can be used for presets. The bugs are neither constant nor devastating, but the odd stutter and hang – particularly when pairing or splitting speakers – gets annoying in a short time. DON'T BUY SONOS is the only advice I can offer. I don't know what else to get; the options you gave were really limited.

Sized and shaped like an ashtray, the Link 1’s duties are to collect song selections from the app, connecting to your home network via either wi-fi or its ethernet input, and dispense via whichever output you have selected. The Addon C5A welcomes us with that same Award-winning musical understanding. There’s plenty of bass for a unit this size, and a level of detail we’ve become used to from these speakers, but the highlight is undoubtedly these boxes’ level of expression. Multi-room speaker systems are tested for sound quality, features, ease of set-up and use, and overall performance. And we aim to test multiple products in each family, usually involving at least two wireless speakers and a soundbar but this will vary depending on each system's product line-up. The increased power and driver and cabinet size predictably ushers a grander performance each step you take up the chain, with the Addon C10 particularly able to rattle trinkets from the mantelpiece or twist our insides with its low-end authority. I will keep this short because there is no real reason to compare. Depending on the size of your room, how much bass you like, and how loud you listen to music will all factor into which one works best.

It is the use of a BMR, or Balanced Mode Radiator, tweeter that is most canny, however. Among its many benefits, this flatter-faced driver has the ability to offer wider dispersion than a traditional tweeter – up to 180º in fact – and so can make the most of the A10’s cylindrical form, making it far less fussy when it comes to positioning. Sound quality is subjective. Ask even two audiophiles to compare the same speaker, and they will probably have very different opinions. At their price point, both of these multiroom speakers massively outperform the competition. If we had to choose between them, though, we would have to give the edge to the Addon C5A. For one thing, it's much more comfortable producing truly room-filling sound. With twin 3/4" tweeters and a 4" long-throw tweeter, all powered by a 40W Class D digital amplifier, it produces truly hi-fi quality sound. The Sonos One is slightly less expressive, whereas the speaker tech and layout of the Addon C5A means music of all genres has enough space to really shine. Features Living with the app is a slightly different proposition, though. In some ways it’s simple –‘drag and drop’ to partner or separate speakers, either in stereo pairs or multi-room zones, and tweak the bass and treble at your leisure. But it can be a little buggy, and is certainly limited compared to most rival systems. This app lets you connect to almost any high-resolution streaming service like Tidal, Qobuzz, Deezer, and Spotify, as well as radio services like TuneIn and iHeart. So let it be known the C5s most obvious talents – expressive dynamics and low-end stability – are entirely transferable. This includes a clever process where the speaker uses in-built sensors to optimise its sound settings for its position in the room. Testing the feature by moving it closer to a wall in our listening room, our reviewers could hear the HomePod 2 adjusting its sound in real-time. Very impressive. It goes loud, too. From the moment we start playing music, it’s clear that the HomePod Mini comfortably outperforms its size and price, quite frankly embarrassing its direct competition with the sophistication and maturity of its sound. The C5A is designed for a normal-sized living room or bedroom. Pumping out volume loud enough to fill that area without having to push volumes above 80%, where distortion will start to occur. But it’s important to point out the Audio Pro is far from the most limited multi-room app out there, and its occasional bug and rudimentary nature is forgivable when you consider the price and sound quality of the speakers it's controlling.

C5A - Audio Pro C5A - Audio Pro

Turning the Addon range into a multi-room system may have been a no-brainer, but we’re thankful Audio Pro has done it so well. The Addon C5 is as happy expressing the irreverence in Mortimer’s tone – and the desperation in Dawson’s as he attempts to say something funny – as it is laying down the grooves on Echoes. In terms of features, both the Sonos One and the Audio Pro Addon C5A are fairly evenly matched. They both come with built-in voice controls via Alexa (the Sonos One also supports Google Assistant too), which definitely makes them a lot easier to use. Simply ask the speaker to start playing something, whether that's a song, playlist, or even an internet radio station, and it will- simple! The usual connections, wired and wireless, are featured, with the A10 having capacity for 3.5mm aux, Bluetooth 4.0, Apple AirPlay, wi-fi andSpotify Connect. It also supports MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC and Apple Lossless formats. Though there is a pair of unknown quantities in the Audio Pro line-up as far as we’re concerned – the Addon C-Sub can help those smaller speakers delve deeper into the low frequencies, while the A40 is set to receive a wider release following its design for the company’s 40th anniversary– our time spent with the rest of the company’s speakers allows us to confidently celebrate it as the best-sounding multi-room suite available for the money.
