It was good. But not great! Having read a lot of Middle-Grade books, I feel this was unable to hold my attention in the way I had hoped. I believe it was partly due to the fact that I had very different kinds of expectations from the book!

Sparkes has also managed to create a really intriguing world, and I just wanted to spend more time inside the house, seeing more of these weird characters, and the world of magic around them. There are hints of bigger things here, of other worlds and places that exist outside of reality, of monsters and creatures from myth and legend. I found myself wanting to learn more about this, and I’d have been over the moon if I’d been told that this was the start of a series that would go on to see the characters having more adventures in magic and weirdness.

I absolutely loved Eric the troll, I cannot even begin to describe how much my heart just felt for him!! This magical little confection of a novel is the second in a delightful series marketed stylistically as "Terry Pratchett meets Diana Wynne-Jones". I was pleased to find that, indeed, this novel has the wry humour of the former, the whimsy of the latter, and the sparkling charm of both. The Tower At The End Of Time by Amy Sparkes is the perfect addition to The House At The Edge Of Magic series.

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that my debut middle-grade comic fantasy adventure The House at the Edge of Magic will be published by Walker Books in spring 2021. Huge thanks to everyone at Walker for their enthusiasm for the story, and also to my agent, Julia Churchill at AM Heath, for arranging the deal. Ray is getting used to life as Rainbow Grey - she now has ALL the magical weather powers at her fingertips, although she hasn't quite mastered them yet! Once Nine had decided for whatever reason to help the occupants of the house with the curse, it was obvious she was going to end up liking them, and perhaps even joining them, but I feel like the connection wasn’t quite built up enough for it to really have the emotional impact I wanted when she finally did so. The second book of The House at the Edge of Magic series. I like this book better than its predecessor, because the story is more interesting, with lots of different sides of the magical world. The tone is still a bit too childish sometimes, but at least we got a better character development here, and even had a glimpse of Nine's origin. And with a large, rough hand, it grabbed Nine by the collar, pulled her inside and slammed the door behind her. There's only one problem: the House is nervous about travelling – and gets the hiccups! Bouncing from world to world with every "HIC!", they finally land at the championships, only for Flabberghast to have an unfortunate run-in with square number seven, and find himself faced with the terrible Tower at the End of Time.
