Incidentally, I am wondering how I did not know about the Snipping Tool available in Windows 7. Goodbye to Alt & PrtSc. I think this will be a brilliant tool to get children using so that they can capture elements of their work and put them together in a presentation! Of course, this doesn’t help if you want to continue using the same save files present on your Switch. Sadly, few games on the Switch offer cloud syncing with their PC versions, but a few key titles do allow this. For example, Diablo II Resurrected (cross-progression is planned), The Witcher 3, and Divinity Original Sin 2 offer cross-progression features.

We all know the importance computers play in our lives. We all know that computing in schools is a top priority subject. And we all know that teaching it is a hit and miss affair where the kids often know more than the person teaching them. What we really need is one of those handy everything-you-need-to-teach-the-new-programme-of-study resources. You know the sort of thing: something that covers all the bases, promises clear progression from Year 1 to Year 6, and supports all levels of expertise. Well, you might not find anything better than Switched on Computing from Rising Stars. Mr Gove's speech was critical of ICT, and announced a consultation on "disapplying" the National Curriculum in ICT. For ICT teachers, it is easy to become disheartened, or to 'shut down'. The Royal Society report, Shut Down or Restart, published in January 2012 took a different view. It recommended restarting; recognising the discipline as Computing, within which clearly defined strands could guide students towards future progression.  We are, in short, re-inventing our subject. All staff felt confident to deliver the unit content ... " Claire Tomkies, Headteacher, Coads Green Primary School, Launceston. AB - ‘A high-quality computing education equips pupilsto use computational thinking and creativity tounderstand and change the world.’Computing programme of study, DfE, 2013Switched on Computing has been designed with theabove aims in mind. It covers all the requirements ofthe Computing programme of study in a way thatis intended to develop pupils’ understanding of theconcepts, practices and perspectives that underpinprogramming and other aspects of computer science, while providing ample opportunity for creative, collaborative project work in which pupils can acquirethe information technology skills they will need.Switched on Computing also helps pupils to understandthe implications of technology for individuals andsociety as they become digitally literate. The approach adopted here is one grounded inthe best primary practice. Ideas of learning throughexperiment, discussion and making are woventhrough the scheme. The topic-based approachprovides enough flexibility for you to link theseactivities with work in other subjects. In the case of the Pro Controller, you can simply plug it into your computer using a USB wired connection, and it will work with no further effort. Alternative Option: Use a Portable MonitorSoftware required: Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel, Picasa or IrfanView to edit the photos, Google Earth The new Switched on Computing units follow the same tried and tested approach as Switched on ICT. They include:

The first half of this issue is focused on encouraging developments in primary schools. It teems with stories of teachers and pupils trying things and reflecting on what works. This is an ingenious solution on Nintendo’s part, but it doesn’t always work for everyone. The good news is that you can access the data more directly from the SD card. Use an SD Card Reader It was a unique event - probably the first of its kind for many years. Computing At School held their inaugural conference for teachers on 19th June at Birmingham University. Focused squarely on the classroom it sought to provide resources and ideas for those looking to engage their students in fun and exciting ways. Over 120 people participated in a day of lively presentations, workshops and smaller discussion groups. If nothing else, we hope that the conference demonstrated to those present that they are not alone and that many excellent resources exist to help them inspire their learners to engage with Computing. We had, in the words of one attendee, 'an absolute blast'! Sign up to our monthly CAS newsletter to hear the latest news from across the community. Stay updated and access the latest resources, events and discussions.Too many people still see Computing as a niche subject for the technically minded. CAS takes a different view. Computational Thinking has generic educational value for developing ways of thinking and learning in all children. The benefits are applicable to many areas, not just our own discipline — one reason CAS lobbied for a curriculum entitlement across all key stages. This issue focuses on inclusion; on making Computing accessible to every child, not just a select few. This term's issue has a focus on Computational Thought, and why there is more to Computing than just programming. There is, hopefully, something of interest to all CAS members and the wider teaching community. Resources and ideas shared by teachers, both primary and secondary. There is also a section on the Network of Excellence for those new to CAS who aren't familiar with current developments. There can be few contexts as motivational for pupils as developing applications for their mobile phones.  Until now, though, developing mobile applications has been the preserve of small numbers of older students.  All that is set to change with a new development from Google.  Google App Inventor is a web based application that has the poptential to allow anyone to create software for Android devices.   We cover this and a whole lot more!ile app development goes visual (Spring 2011) This fine collection puts creativity and collaboration to the fore. It draws on deep and extensive knowledge of computing, progression and continuity, and is well planned, innovative, cross-curricular, stretching but accessible, and vitally, it has been well-trialled in schools.

With the prospect of all Year 7 pupils receiving a BBC MicroBit in September, this issue takes a timely look at physical computing. Lots of ideas from teachers about different devices and their use in both primary and secondary classrooms. The new curriculum is about empowering a generation with an appreciation of how their digital world works. It's not about doing a bit of Java, or any other language, but developing the ability to think in a computational ways. These are exciting times but for many teachers, much will be new. CAS exists to support you on this journey. We all agree we need to teach our kids to code. The debate about how best to do so is only just getting going. The more you try, the more you'll find you can contribute and share. This 5-step guide provides you with some hints and tips to help you to fully embed Switched On Computing within your school successfully.

As more teachers embrace Computing, we will all have ideas to share. No-one has a blueprint for what works best. CAS brings fellow professionals together in the Network of Excellence, to share ideas and develop that subject You may be trying to connect your Joy-Cons or Pro Controller to your PC rather than your entire Switch. While you’re better off using an Xbox controller or even a Playstation controller with PC games, if all you have is a Nintendo controller (or you’re emulating Nintendo titles), they are easy to hook up to your computer. Amanda is a Senior Inspector, working for HES - Havering Education Services. She has 20+ years' experience working across the primary and secondary sectors, including 12 years in school improvement. She is a School Improvement Professional (SIP) and LA Quality Assurance Inspector for primary schools in Havering, supporting and challenging on whole school improvement. Amanda has worked with Rising Stars on the development of Bett Award winning Switched on Computing, Switched on Online Safety and other titles. She has recently worked with the Department for Education to support the creation of the education technology content of the Teacher Workload Reduction Toolkit. Beyond work, Amanda is a governor of a primary school in Essex, sitting on the Curriculum Committee and chairing the Resources Committee. Dave Smith

With this in mind, we have worked with the author of Learn to Code Practice Books, Claire Lotriet, to put together four complete activities for KS1 to UKS2 to teach maths through computing. Help your students stay safe online with a whole school online safety provision including lessons and assemblies, teacher guidance, CPD videos and regular guidance on key online safety issues. If you just want a big screen to connect your Switch to, but want the portability of a laptop, then another option is to use a portable monitor. These can run off USB power, have built-in speakers, and have HDMI input ports. You can use the USB-C cable bundled with the Switch Pro Controller. This progression grid shows you how the six strands of the new computing curriculum are developed from Year 1 through to Year 6. One year on and it is clear that Computing teachers are rising to the challenge of the new curriculum and a vibrant grassroots community of practice is emerging. This issue reports on developments to support the wonderful work of CAS members.

It’s not often teachers have a chance to affect what happens on a world scale, but that is one of the outcomes of our remarkable curriculum journey. This issue takes a look at developments across the globe. A worldwide movement to establish Computing in schools is emerging. CAS members, particularly those in the classroom, are playing a key part in shaping its development. This method works by temporarily turning your Switch into a web server.
