Description

Use one drop into the eye (or eyes) affected by dryness. Many people find it is sufficient to use the drops three or four times a day, but you can use the drops more frequently if your eyes are very dry. If the drops have been prescribed for you then follow the directions given by your doctor. Most eye drops in bottles only keep for four weeks once the container has been opened, so do not use the drops if the bottle has been open for longer than this. This helps to reduce the risk of eye infection. Concomitant ocular medication should be administered 15 minutes prior to the instillation of carmellose sodium eye drops. Mild side effects: Eye drops and ointment can cause mild stinging, blurred sight or a funny taste in the mouth soon after putting them in. This medicine is available without prescription from pharmacies. Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your pharmacist or nurse has told you.

Celluvisc may cause transient blurring of vision which may impair the ability to drive or operate machines. The patient should wait until their vision has cleared before driving or using machinery.

Carmellose sodium eye drops are also known as 'artificial tears'. They are used to relieve eye dryness and soreness. They moisten, soothe and lubricate the surface of your eye, making it feel more comfortable. The following adverse reactions or medically relevant adverse events were reported during clinical trials: Some lubricant eye drops also form a protective layer that helps to stop your tears evaporating. These may help if your dry eyes are mainly caused by too much evaporation of your tears.

At the time of writing there is limited published experience regarding the safety of carmellose sodium in human pregnancy, however, carmellose sodium eye drops have been used for many years with no adverse effects reported and the manufacturer states no special precautions are necessary during pregnancy. Schaefer advises that artificial tears may be used for all appropriate indications during pregnancy (Schaefer 2007).

Due to the high molecular weight (approx. 90,000 Daltons) carmellose sodium is unlikely to penetrate the cornea. The following additional adverse reactions have been identified during postmarketing use of Celluvisc in clinical practice.
