The Oxford Literary Festival has in my mind become the leading literary festival of the year. The organisation, the roster of speakers, the ambience and the sheer quality of it all is superb. May it now go from strength to strength each year stretching its ambition more and more. I believe it will. Through Richmond’s life you can see racial politics and the abolition of slavery, the war with America, the war with France, and poverty. There’s gambling, culture, masculinity, art and sculpture, violence in the streets, the role of fatherhood and parenthood, fame, and whether there’s an economic safety net for people who are famous in their 50s. You can examine the entire society through this one man.”

I fear my inner nerd is on the loose, but this book was so excellent - I absolutely loved learning about the history of (pretty boring and bog standard) household objects (including cats!) and every day items we use (cars, toilets, soap etc). On TV, he co-hosted BBC2's INSIDE VERSAILLES discussion programme for two series, and was one of the expert panellists on BBC2's THE GREAT HISTORY QUIZ (broadcast on Christmas Eve 2015), joining team captains Lucy Worsley and Dan Snow.

Mark Butler (23 January 2017). "Sex and swearing in the 1800s: Taboo is more historically accurate than you think". i. Mae Jenner yn adrodd y straeon difyr sydd y tu ôl i bob math o bethau dinod – gan gynnwys sebon, grawnfwyd, bwlb golau, gemau pêl, ffonau, soffas a phyjamas, wedi’u harchwilio gyda chyfuniad o ffeithiau anhygoel, jôcs sy’n tynnu dŵr i’r llygaid a straeon bywyd go iawn o ledled y byd ac ar draws y canrifoedd.Rattus is essentially footnotes for children, which is an incredibly sophisticated tool. He’s there confirming and denying in situ, live as you watch a sketch. It’s like going to see Oppenheimer in the cinema and having an animatronic historian next to you going ‘he never met Einstein, that’s not true.’” Greg is both a passionate defender and careful critic of the way in which the past is exploited for entertainment. He is an Honorary Research Associate at Royal Holloway, University of London where he teaches on the Public History MA course. He also teaches occasionally at his alma mater, the University of York, where he studied for 4 years before abandoning plans for a PhD to instead go into the TV industry. He didn’t set out to teach millions of children that Incans used urine as shampoo, or that Pythagoras died whilst evading a field of beans. Greg Jenner’s original plan was to go down the academic pipeline of PHD to Professor of History.

Discover how cereal came to be and what were classified as beds in the Stone Age, the weird and painful history of soap, and the bike style in the "olden days"! I highly recommend this book and I think it's a great way to introduce younger people to history and show them that not all history is boring!! Jenner, Greg (28 October 2021). Whilst doing work experience on Days That Shook the World at Lion TV , however, Jenner felt he had found his answer in historical consultancy. For a few years he continued working on documentaries and period dramas before happening to overhear Lion’s Chief Creative Officer saying they had the television rights to Terry Deary’s series of history books for children. I came away buzzing and reassured that we still have in this century a wide ranging community fascinated not just by famous authors (I’ve rarely seen so many concentrated in one place) but by challenging ideas and questions. After thinking for a moment for a more anthropological reason, he does not disappoint: “We don’t want dramas about inflationary crises and global warming disasters. We want to be reassured that people in bonnets are going to fall in love. Jenner has worked as an historical consultant on the Horrible Histories books and television shows. [3] Jenner has accredited the success of Horrible Histories to a non-patronising approach to children’s television. [4]
