Iolo Morganwg (1747-1826) – antiquarian, poet, tall-story-teller, and founder of the modern National Eisteddfod. This poem was published in the second poetry collection by Gillian Clarke, is not a typical poem about Welsh culture and countryside. It features some characters that could be from the poet's country. It should be regarded as one of the poet's and one of Wales best poems due to its highly relatable and important themes. Welsh poetry refers to poetry that is written by Welsh people, including Welsh language poetry, poetry written in English by a Welsh person and Wales-based poets. Ifor ap Glyn (b.1961) is a former National Poet of Wales. Born in London to Welsh parents, he is a multi-award-winning poet, presenter, director and producer. He has twice won the Crown at the National Eisteddfod – one of the festival’s most prestigious prizes. He lives in Caernarfon and has represented Welsh poetry around the world in both the Welsh and English language, having performed at festivals such as the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington DC. 4. Dylan Thomas (1914 - 1953) In 1917, he was fortunate to earn a scholarship to attend the grammar school in Narberth and later in 1923 until 1926 he studied English at the University of Aberystwyth. He then spent another year training to be a teacher. The best place to start is with Wales’s most famous poet: Dylan Thomas. When you think of Wales and Welsh culture, this is certainly one of the first names that come to mind. So, let’s take a look at his whirlwind life.

Philip Pullman (b1946) – the author of His Dark Materials trilogy went to school in Ysgol Ardudwy, Harlech. A TV adaptation starring Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is being filmed in Wales. Several of his works are studied by school children in the UK and are featured on the WJEC and AQA A Level syllabuses. A lot of his poetry was written at his family farm, where he worked as a shepherd for most of his life. His poetic style was influenced by romantic poetry, and dominant themes included religion and nature. Ironically, Wyn also wrote several war poems during his lifetime. A STARTLING sheet of ornate love poetry written by a Welsh emigrant more than 200 years ago has been uncovered at an American museum. There is also an Eisteddfod held for children and young people, called the ‘ Eisteddfod Yr Urdd’. This is an annual festival that provides an opportunity for young people to get involved in Welsh language poetry and other art forms, and is renowned as a premier arts festival in Europe.
