In Ojibwe culture, women are the protectors of the water and men are the protectors of the fire. Perhaps it is for that reason that I felt compelled to speak for the water through this story. Humans have been missed treating Mother Earth for millennia, and Indigenous Peoples have long acted as stewards of the planet, giving a voice to our silent home. This is a long review because this is an important book and the discussions surrounding it are important. I think the book has much to offer but I also found it a bit incomplete. It provided a rousing call to action to protect our water and the environment, but failed to provide actionable steps that children can take to actually BE water protectors. If you don’t have time to read my full review, I encourage you to skip to the bottom where I list some ideas for protecting our water (and I encourage you to add to the list). In my own research over the past several years, I have been surprised by some of the ways water resources are threatened—as well as the measures we can take to help. The Water Walker is a picture book written and illustrated by Joanne Robertson and tells the story or Josephine Mandamin and her love of nibi (water), her water walks, and the importance of protecting water.
