The new Car Seat Headrest album, Twin Fantasy, is a completely re-recorded version of an album that Toledo originally released in 2011. There’s not much precedent for this sort of do-over—if this were film, say, it’d be like Steven Soderbergh re-making Sex, Lies and Videotape, which I could actually see him doing at some point. But Toledo, two years after his last batch of new songs, apparently believes enough in this album to think that he can make a better version of it to share with the wider world. Originally released on November 2nd, 2011 and pressed onto vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day 2018. This new pressing is available on white colored vinyl. My copy has quite a lot of surface noise, and the sound quality feels really subpar in most of the songs compared to the digital version. I’ve obviously made them listen to this album and probably half of Car Seat Headrest’s discography at this point because they’re still my favourite band.

Recording for Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) began in 2016, with much of the instrumental work being recorded live at Soundhouse in Seattle. Vocals were recorded separately by engineer Adam Stilson at Decade Music Studios in Chicago. Post production and mixing took place between Decade Music Studios and Will Toledo's apartment, [5] [6] with most effects, stems and final mixes run through the studio's vintage mixing console. Released on February 16, 2018, this version of the album is dubbed Twin Fantasy (Face to Face), with the original version now being called Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror). These new titles derive from the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 13:12; part of a famous chapter discussing love. The new titles are referenced multiple times throughout this version. The most important album I've ever listened to. This review has been a long time in the making. Around five years to be exact because that would be when this album came out. Five years ago in 2018 I listened to Twin Fantasy for the first time and my life changed.
