Description

He was baptized Colum, which means “dove,” which was Latinized into the name we know him as: Columba. There's a bit of an odd, almost preternatural pun associated with his name. Apparently, he's also known by the name Colum-cille, which means “of the Churches” in Gaelic. Much later in 1933 a road was built alongside the Loch and the noise and disruption upset Nessie. So one day she was 'sneaking over the road for a wander in the heather' when she was spotted by an astonished Mr and Mrs George Spicer from London. Nessie's life was never be the same again.

Found this on a recent trip in Scotland. It's marketed to kids, obviously, but it's not really a story so much as a very simple summary of Loch Ness and its monster sightings. Nessie is not a character but a figure, often called "it" rather than "she," so I'm not sure what voice Brassey was going for. It's very informative, if not terribly riveting, and has dates and names and such.He constantly fasted and kept long vigils into the night. Adamnan assures us Columba was beloved by all “for a holy joyousness that ever beamed from his countenance revealed the gladness with which the Holy Spirit filled his soul.” He was said to have an Irish temper and often got his Irish up. But after all, you can't rid a lake of evil, ravenous monsters by gently listening to their feelings and singing “Kumbaya.” This book was interesting to read. I think this legend is fun because Loch Ness means something. It actually means “the lake of the monster.” As somebody who is reading about a monster, I would want to know where it got its name. In a legend, people in the story really did exist but their story is embellished in the retellings. The biggest characteristic on why this story is a legend is that it has been retold orally repeatedly. Many different people “sighted” Nessie and told their story about her. Therefore, she gained new characteristics or new stories about her (true and false). A man and woman who spotted Nessie created distractions for her, because people now were on the lookout for her. Throughout the story, the author uses humor and historical accuracy to recall countless stories of Nessie. However, the uncritical might be led to believe Nessie still exists as a living creature, even currently. This is highly unlikely, as Loch Ness and its tributaries could never produce enough food for a mated pair of inordinately large creatures living multiple generations from the sixth century down to our present times, having escaped notice successfully all of these intervening years.

One of the first to systematically investigate the Loch Ness Monster, Gould set off from Inverness on a motorcycle on 14 November, 1938 and circled the Loch twice over a period of days. He interviewed as many witnesses as possible, including the Spicers, and investigated various theories for the sightings, such as the idea that the monster was a prehistoric creature, or perhaps a normal sea animal that had swum into the loch by accident. When Columba got the gist of the story from the assembled mourners, he laid his staff across the dead man's chest and, miraculously, the man stood up, hale and hearty.
