All willows were seen as trees of celebration in biblical times but this has changed over time and now willows are often associated with sadness and mourning. With all the celebration and neolithic celestial alignment that goes on at Stonehenge, there’s no denying that the summer solstice is perhaps the oldest excuse to throw a party going. From solitary witches to groves of druids, most Pagan faiths have honoured the solstice with rituals, feasts, and just a hint of debauchery across Europe for thousands of years. After a couple hours, I’d gotten it to the point above and I was forced to set it aside in favor of working on some commercial work. But I returned to it the next day. Still moving along with establishing the values and beginning to insinuate details here and there. For whatever reason, the colors I put down felt more intense than I’d have preferred, so I spent a lot of time experimenting with different mixtures to tone down the color intensity a bit. It’s possible I went a little overboard in muting the color, but given how grayish brown everything seemed to be with the wildfire smoke outside, it felt like the right direction to go.

The story follows Jamie Tuff as she discovers the truth behind the happenings at the island as well as discovers the truth of her powers. Jamie and her friends set out to save the souls that have been taken. The story is well written and has a simple plot that will keep the reader entertained. The book is more for children in the teens and such and it will appeal to their idea of fantasy and magic. The ancient Chinese participated in a ceremony on the summer solstice to honor the earth, femininity and the force known as yin. It complemented the winter solstice ritual, which was devoted to the heavens, masculinity and yang. Ancient Northern and Central European Tribes Many Germanic, Slavic and Celtic pagans welcomed summer with bonfires, a tradition that is still enjoyed in Germany, Austria, Estonia and other countries. Some ancient tribes practiced a ritual in which couples would jump through the flames to predict how high that year’s crops would grow. Vikings I loved the setting. Pity Me School reminded me of an evil Hogwarts and I found a lot of the magical side of the story had touches of Harry Potter about it (which can only be a good thing!) The way in which the Grand Hall was described had me picturing Hogwarts & the caped teachers sitting at the front on a stage. Then there’s the ‘Pity Me Perfects’ who do all of the teachers spying for them and appear where you’d least expect them. The Woodland Trust is a charity registered in England and Wales (No. 294344) and in Scotland (No. SC038885). In the days leading up to the summer solstice, ancient Romans celebrated the Vestalia festival, which paid tribute to Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Rituals included the sacrifice of an unborn calf removed from its mother’s womb. This was the only time of the year when married women were allowed to enter the sacred temple of the vestal virgins and make offerings to Vesta there. Ancient Chinese This time, I’ve expanded my palette a bit and scrounged up some Strathmore 500 Series 3-ply Bristol. This stuff is regular surface, which has a nice, subtle tooth to it, and is what several of my more experienced gouache-painting friends recommended. Another feature of this book that I just have to praise is the illustrations. They are amazing (some are downright creepy!) and they add that little extra to each chapter and the atmosphere of the scenes. I noticed that it was Holly Hinton herself who drew these illustrations…she is one talented lady!

Then when one of Jamie’s close friends, Ella, is Taken at Dancing Ledge, even Jamie’s friends Seveny, Max and George start to doubt Jamie’s innocence as she is put on the notorious ‘Gifted and Dangerous’ register at Pity Me.
