Roku Gin is the first of its kind, originating from Japan’s legendary Suntory – Roku Gin. This expression of gin is made using a selection of botanicals, including six Japanese botanicals that provide a whistle-stop tour of the four seasons. Fake Japanese whisky is flooding the market thanks to its high quality and strong demand for this type of whisky. To spot fake Japanese whiskey, take note and be aware of the following points:

I also really like the look of the bottle in my drinks cabinet and it’s taken pride of place at the front :) I didn’t want to open the bottle but temptation gave in. These four seasons include the beautiful sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter. The warm, pungent flavour of ginger further highlights the unique quality of the Japanese botanicals.Palate Complex, multi-layered, yet harmonious flavour of various botanicals. Traditional gin taste in the base, plus characteristic Japanese botanical notes with yuzu as the top note. Smooth and silky texture. Owning, opening and drinking this gin is a whole experience - from the aroma you get when you open the bottle and how special it feels when poring your first drink to taking your first sip - an utter delight. In Japanese, Roku translates as number six. Inside every bottle of Roku Gin, you will find six very special botanical that are sourced in Japan. Each botanical has been harvested at the peak of its season to extract the best flavour, and distilled to fully embody the blessings of nature. The harvest of the four seasons has been blended to create ROKU's balanced flavour. It's got a very vibrant taste to me. I don't have the developed palate to describe what it tastes like, but I enjoy it, and it'll be my go-to gin, especially at this price point.

Traditional gin botanicals also featured include the likes of juniper, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander and cinnamon, among others. You can try serving Roku Gin in a gin and tonic with a ginger garnish, which accentuates the citrus notes. In the ever popular Martini, Roku Gin works well as a mixer. In fact, it is the best gin for a Martini. The bitterness almost simulates the inclusion of Vermouth. You can go super dry with Roku and still have a Martini that hits the expected notes, making Roku Gin one of the best Martini gins . This is one of the loveliest gin’s I have tasted. The experience I have had with other types of gin is that it has taken a few sips to adapt to the taste - I don’t get that with this gin, it is instantly tasty.

Roku means “six” in Japanese which refers to the six local, seasonal botanicals which complement the eight traditional gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed, angelica root & seed, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange, lemon peel). This gives this type of alcohol a distinctly Japanese character. Japanese botanicals are the sakura flower (cherry blossom), sakura leaf, sencha tea, gyokuro tea, sansho pepper and yuzu peel. Palate:Complex, multi layered, yet harmonious flavour of various botanicals. Traditional gin taste in the base, plus characteristic Japanese botanical notes with yuzu as the top note. Smooth and silky texture. Sometimes, fakers of Roku Gin are overly enthusiastic and overfill the bottle. This can be a bit hard to spot because it doesn’t happen all the time.

I tried mixing with grapefruit tonic but it was overwhelmed by the grapefruit. In a standard gin and tonic I found the flavour excellent although it did need more tonic than normal as it tasted very strong. Overall I enjoyed the flavour but it probably depends on other gins you appreciate. If you enjoy smooth gins such as Citadel reserve this may be for you. Sakura flower, Sakura leaf, Yuzu peel, Sencha tea (green tea), Gyokuro tea (refined green tea) and Sansho pepper. Six Japanese botanicals cultivated over four seasons, the six Japanese botanicals have been carefully selected to create ROKU, Japan's authentic craft gin. My only real complaint is the low juniper (and even there, I feel this has more than many of the modern gins out there). If they were to make a style with a heavier juniper profile, that would almost certainly become my absolute favorite gin!Palate: Complex, multi-layered, yet harmonious flavour of various botanicals. Traditional gin taste in the base, plus characteristic Japanese botanical notes with yuzu as the top note. Smooth and silky texture. All the botanicals are distilled separately to extract their unique characters before bringing all 14 together in this epic gin. I don't have a lot of experience with gin, and this is the 4th I've tried, and it's my favorite so far. My previous ones were Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire, and Aviation. Smelling like fresh pine with a citrusy tinge, the fruity floral notes of sakura gently ebbs through Roku Gin and the whiff of Japan through the underlying green tea notes once you take a deep breath gives your palate a refreshing change.

I made duplicate martinis, one with Beefeaters, and one with Roku. It isn't even close, really. I did drink them both simultaneously, so I'm feeling pretty good right now! The first thing you should look at is the label on the Roku Gin bottle. Often, the print quality, resolution, text and colour is a bit off and looks even more so when compared side by side to the original. A very subtle and clean gin. Perhaps a little TOO clean and subtle. Nothing too unique about it, like I was hoping. But if someone is looking for a gin that doesn’t punch you in the face with botanicals, this is a good choice. There are two variations of Roku gin. One from Duty Free stating SELECT EDITION in a Gold band on the front The other one is available from shops and online. Massive difference between the two. I have previously brought this gin for a friends birthday gift, but at the time buying something I hadn’t tasted myself was risky. She did assure me it was really lovely - I can now agree :) These represent Suntory’s commitment to only use the best ingredients harvested from the best growing areas in Japan. The saying ‘if it’s too good to be true, it probably is’ can be applied here. If it is too cheap Roku Gin, it is probably a fake.
