Willamette students Ceci and Molly were joined today by Sara, who helped them get down through the robber debris at the north-eastern end of Structure Twenty-Seven. (Sigurd Towrie) Chris Gee has been working on the south-eastern side of Twenty-Seven, looking at the robber-cut where Neolithic stone-hunters not only removed the entire wall but also attempted to remove the prone orthostats that held the stone-cladding against the interior wall face. Joe brought along an aurochs horn that was found in a stream, in Cheshire, when he was but a lad. When compared to the horns of our scale model of a Neolithic bull, the size is very similar. They have achieved, admirably, what we tasked them to do – open a trench extension and expose another section of the northern boundary wall, aka the “Great Wall of Brodgar”. Jan has now excavated down to what is probably the remains of the corner of Structure Twenty-Eight’s internal south-western corner.Elsewhere in Twelve, Jan was excavating an ashy “lump” outside the building’s southern hearth. It’s early days yet, but we are pondering whether this is another example of a “slow cooker”, akin to the one found in the north-western recess.
