The world building is lazy at best. There is no coherent theology, geography, or mythos. Vampires and werewolves and demons and witches and the like make up the dominant demographic, with humans like the poor protagonist being second class citizens and erstwhile food sources. The city they call home is apparently the only inhabited place in the world. In short, the characters were the biggest part of the reason why this was a disaster. And the romance, too, of course. The book starts off with Loren’s attempted kidnapping, and the action never slows. Darien, the head of a bounty hunter clan, is hired to find her. But, of course, we have a forbidden love story that is filled with the most amazing tension I’ve read in a really long time. I guess I had a very different take on this book than others did. I did not connect to any characters really, in fact I was never invested at any time of the story. Loren and Darien are definitely rising up to be one of my favorite couples that I got to know this year. The chemistry and sexual tension between the two is INTENSE.

Past Bram Stoker Nominees & Winners". Horror Writers Association. Archived from the original on 2017-10-17 . Retrieved 2021-10-12.What I liked about Loren was, that she wasn´t really the badass woman you normally read in Fantasy books, she was more or less your girl next door with no real special magical powers. To be honest it makes her a bit prone to be the damsel in distress and to always get saved by Darien, but it wasn´t to a point where it would´ve annoyed me. I loved her and Dariens relationship, the slowburn is delicious and the sexual tension is amazing, I loved the angst between them. Darien is your typical "touch her and I´ll kill you" guy we all know and love; so you just know he will probably be your next book boyfriend. I mean you won´t find a guy who will kidnap you and take you out to dinner in the process just anywhere. Demons - Devils - Vampires - Werewolves - Witches + other supernatural creatures (all living in a single city) This book was excruciatingly slow and it was very complicated (for me) to not roll my eyes at the cheesy and cliché dialogues.

It was utterly adorable to see them slowly come to care for each other and let their walls down. I admit I was hoping for a bit more spice, but what we got was really really good. It was super hot.the plot of this was sort of interesting but WAY too drawn out, I found myself skimming and skimming... and skimming. The dynamic between the Seven Devils and Loren and her friends was entertaining and a great touch of “found family”. And I mean, Max rendered speechless by Dallas was priceless. trigger warnings: loss of loved ones, domestic abuse (mentioned), death of an animal, sexual assault (not done by the love interest), drugs, kidnapping This city was a mess, he had to admit. It was dark and dirty and riddled with sinners, but it was his city, the only land he'd ever known. On some sleepless nights, the horns of the sinners became halos, and the streets felt like paradise.”

Starting from the title and proceeding with everything else, plot points included, the similarities are too obvious to deny. Until you came along, my life never made sense. You are the kindest thing that has ever happened to me. You are... You are my home. And I think it's safe to say that my life would be a whole lot darker without you in it. You light up my life, Loren Calla." I do not want to deter readers when I say this is a slow slowburn romance because from the moment they meet, every Loren and Darien scene is infused with so many feelings and so much sexual tension. The spice is truly rewarding and worth the wait although some moments are scattered throughout the book. The 24th Annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards". While not so original (and I'm saying this kindly, because, seriously, it felt like reading House of Earth and Blood all over again), I have reasons to believe those readers who finshed and rated this book positively. yes, this book defiantly has major MAJOR Crescent City vibes, where you have a world filled with different supernatural/paranormal beings where the poor humans and half breeds are trying to survive in their day to day life without getting killed. The pace of our mcs relationship is amazing, and seems more realistic. They grow, learn, and change together throughout the whole book. This book has everything: slow burn, found family, morally grey man, witty banter, touch her you die. I really loved loren's innocence mixed with Darien's badass and soft inside out. Her adaptability in face of complicated and uncharted situations, her resilience and her vulnerability contribute to her persona while making her even more relatable.

City of Gods and Monsters - Goodreads

the world is massive and sufficiently built up enough to provide a good setting. the characters, although consistently inconsistent, are fun to read about. the plot did a good job at holding my attention. and, considering how long this is, there was never a point where it felt like the story was dragging. The interactions between Darian and Loren were amazing. Since their first encounter the spark was there. It’s a perfect slow burn were we see how deeply they love and care for each other. There is angst, jealousy, “touch her and you will die”, devotion and love. Darien is 100% possessive of Loren and Loren is 100% in love with Darien since their first encounter. The Mares of Diomedes, also called the Mares of Thrace, were a herd of man-eating horses in Greek mythology belonging to the giant Diomedes. The Mares, which were the terror of the region of Thrace, were kept tethered by iron chains to a bronze manger and were named Podargos (the swift), Lampon (the shining), Xanthos (the yellow) and Deinos (the terrible). Heracles (Hercules) defeated these monsters in his eight labor. He fed Diomedes, their master, to his own horses and while they were occupied with their human meal, Heracles found the opportunity to bind their mouths shut. For fans of the ACOTAR ~*~ throne scene~*~ in A Court of Mist and Fury, you will be happy to know there is a far more detailed, lengthy, spicy scene very similar in this book! Hoo boy... I absolutely adored Loren. She’s young but not clueless, innocent but not weak, self aware but never whiny, and selfless to her very core most of the time at her own expense. She failed to make the same mistakes that commonly befall younger heroines trying to “find their way” and won my heart over SO fast in the process. She also suffers from an illness that closely resembles diabetes. Seeing that represented in a MC meant the world to me as someone who grew up with a relative diagnosed with diabetes at a young age who never had strong female characters to relate to and admire in that sense. Watching Loren’s growth and self-confidence build her into the strong force you knew she had the potential to be all along was incredible and I can’t wait to see where her newfound strength takes her next…I have a feeling she’s really going to need it.
