Whether it was mother’s intuition or something else, Pennell immediately felt something was wrong with her daughter. The Hollywood Reporter (August 23, 2018). If you like visual representations, especially charts, and would like to see how America is doing today versus other countries and versus itself in the past, you might enjoy this book. The book itself reads something like a memoir and a conservation story. Williams retells the story of the Tokio Express, the millions of Legos it lost into the sea and how those Legos are still washing up on beaches over 20 years later. That alone is a fascinating story but Williams goes further to frame this within the larger crisis of plastic pollution and includes the history of other plastic bits found on shorelines.

Steven Callahan (17 October 2002). Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. ISBN 0-547-52656-3. Amazingly, Ashcraft still loves to sail and “is a 100-ton licensed captain with more than 50,000 offshore miles” under her belt. If you did not guess from the title, Adrift is the true story of a man who, after his boat sinks, spends seventy-six days adrift in a tiny life raft. One might think that a guy sitting in a raft for seventy-six days might get monotonous, but this book is captivating and inspiring. I won't give away the details, but the all of the things that Callahan went through to survive were incredible. I'll refrain from telling the reader of this review too much more about what happens next, because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone. She began to read again and then, encouraged by her mother, began to write down what happened. Ashcraft jotted it all down, on napkins, legal tablets, anything she could get her hands on. She went on to pen the book that inspired Adrift the movie.Tami dealt with years of grief by eventually writing her story down and penning the book Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea. She is pictured on the left more than a decade after the tragedy. I think this book would be enjoyed more by someone who works with their hands and can appreciate Callahan's connection with his boat and skill in patching up equipment failures. I expected some technical details, but these were more numerous than I liked. Ehrlich, David (May 31, 2018). " 'Adrift' Review: Shailene Woodley Rescues a True Life Survival Thriller from Drowning at Sea". IndieWire. Penske Business Media . Retrieved May 31, 2018. I thought this book was fantastic, Tracey Williams writes a fantastic book about the pollution she has witnessed and the culture of beach combing. I was drawn to this book by a YouTube video (that I will link at the bottom) that reveals the extent to which pollution in the sea has an everlasting effect. I was astonished to read that pieces of LEGO from a 1997 derelict were still washing on U.K. shores. Williams isn't necessarily a researcher either which makes this book more accessible to the general audience while still teaching them from the research she did do to write this. While the writing is base level, the book makes up for it with stunning, colorful diagrams and graphics that make you realize just how full the ocean is with human litter from old Monopoly houses to actual artifacts.

This short read details every aspect of her 41 day journey as she battles testing conditions to reach safety, the fact that her fiance Richard was lost after the yacht hit a hurricane showed Tami's task even more difficult as she tussles with her emotions. She told the San Diego Union Tribune she saw “a guy outside on a boat looking through a porthole...It was blurry. I saw Tami and she had something red on her head - a gash.” It’s clear Ashcraft has never forgotten Sharp but he doesn’t haunt her and instead reminds her that life is worth living. Years after her accident, she took the ring he had given her in Tahiti, attached it to a rose and put it out to sea. The book is very short and can be read in less than a day, which is also unfortunate. Not many people have experienced what the author went through and I believe her ordeal deserved a more detailed description. Perhaps a ghost writer could have helped this author dig deeper into her mind and soul to better describe the loneliness and desparation of the untenable situation. Wikimedia Commons has media related to Steven Callahan talks to students at North Yarmouth Academy. One of the things I loved about this book is Tami's independence. When she starts working on boats, she insists on learning how to navigate, even with a sextant, and this knowledge definitely played a big role in solving her life. She knew more and had more experience with boats than most of the men she sailed with. I could identify with her desire to live life on her own terms and not stay settled. Lovely book, art and nature combined to examine how much plastic we throw into the sea. For an AFOL like me, the focus on the 1997 Lego container washed overboard and its contents still washing up ashore is an appealing one. I loved seeing how the elements became sought after by beachcombers - the octopuses, hard to spot as their real world versions, and the rare green dragons especially. a b "Man Adrift At Sea For 76 Days Reveals How He Survived Against All Odds". LifeDaily . Retrieved May 30, 2018. As I turn on my computer one night, there's a message waiting for me. It's from a trawler fisherman. 'Found this chap last trip. He's 'armless, so won't bite.' In the accompanying picture is a sea-weary Lego man, missing an arm and his legs, the letters 'TV' on his chest. Baleilevuka, Rusiate (July 10, 2017).
