Description

Join the London cast at The Shaftesbury Theatre for the Tony Award-nominated score full of addictive earworms like More Than Survive and the hugely popular Michael in the Bathroom. Be More Chill is a universal, sci-fi tinged story about the competing voices in all of our heads. This "fantastically funny” (The Guardian) musical "fizzes with feel-good energy” (The Stage) and features "an absolutely terrific young British cast" (The Telegraph). Jeremy has a crush on Christine, but of course she’s dating a popular boy and Jeremy will never have a chance with her. He can barely sustain a conversation with her half the time. But somehow he hopes that things might change someday. Of course, getting everything you wish for, especially because of a supercomputer, is fraught with disaster and never turns out quite like you think it will. I mean, does anything turn out well when you let a digestible supercomputer take control of your life?

I think this book requires a certain type of mindset going into it to actually enjoy it. That mindset would be to not take this book seriously at all. This book is definitely meant to be taken satirically. If you take this book at face value that means you'll be horrified by how vulgar this supposed "Young Adult" book is. This book is filled with complex issues such as drugs, partying, alcohol, sexism, stealing, and a whole barrage of other mature themes that I don't want to get into.

McPhee, Ryan (2020-02-28). "Cast Set for Chicago Run of Be More Chill". Playbill.com . Retrieved 2020-03-31. The ending of the book reminded me very much of the ending to Stardust which I found very nice and even though I knew how it ended from my friend I was still pleasantly surprised by it. Michael Mell is an entirely different character. He's nothing, and I mean nothing, like musical Michael. At all. I think about things for a second. I don't want to give Michael crucial information that'll help him get his hands on a squip. He does all right with the Asian girls at Middle Borough; he ends up talking to the ones you never noticed---but are actually pretty hot---and he dated one last year for more than a week. He doesn't need a mechanical advantage the way I do. Let him find out on his own.

On Halloween, Jake hosts a large party that features alcohol and other shenanigans ("Halloween"). Christine arrives in her Juliet princess costume because of Jake's past compliment on it, hoping to please Jake, but he brushes her aside to party. Jeremy arrives to meet Brooke, but Chloe, who is jealous of Brooke, tries to seduce Jeremy. Jeremy is uncomfortable and tries to get away, but the SQUIP forces him to remain in the situation as it escalates to Chloe making out with Jeremy ("Do You Wanna Hang?"). Chloe also has Jeremy drink alcohol, causing the SQUIP to malfunction, and then feigns having sex with him, angering Jake and breaking Brooke's heart. Another thing to note is that Jeremy's love interest is not as sexually active as other girls, and is often described to be different than the other girls he meets whom he respects very little, once again, enforcing the hypocritical view of sexuality between the genders. Jenna went into her thing about, 'Elizabeth let four guys do her on the bus' and I had the balls to say to her what I've always wanted to say, deadpan: 'Shut up, Jenna. We know Elizabeth is like your Spider-Slut alterego or something.'" (171). Jake Dillinger: Christine's love interest at the beginning of the book, constantly having sex with hot people. McPhee, Ryan (2018-08-10). "Be More Chill Extends Off-Broadway Engagement". Playbill . Retrieved 2019-09-30. On one cover of the book version of Be More Chill, the Squip is depicted as a blue chip with silicone-chip-esque lines. However, in both the text and the musical, it is described as a grey, oblong pill. In the musical, Jeremy claims it's similar to a Wintergreen Tic Tac.

All Jeremy wants is to be Cool. He wants to rub shoulders with the Hottest Girls in School. But most of all, he wants the attention of Christine, a girl in his drama club who won his heart over.

Henry, Alan. "Breaking: BE MORE CHILL Will Get A London Upgrade in 2020". Broadway World . Retrieved 2019-09-30. Mostly I thought it had too many mean girls and guys and nasty drama that made me happy that I’m no longer in high school. Is it really like this? Yikes. But the squip was an interesting idea with a humorous voiceover that I feel I’ve encountered before in some other movie or book….? Can’t think of it now tho. Voices in My Head" – Mr. Heere, Michael, Rich, Jeremy, Jenna, Brooke, Chloe, Jake, Christine & EnsembleI think the ending of the book was much more convincing than that of the musical. See: Book Jeremy was rejected by Christine after trying to tell her feelings about her. She is absolutely right to reject him, but she still gives it a try and decides to read the book Jeremy wrote for her. This ending gives a suspense that maybe they will have some kind of relationship, regardless of whether they will remain friends or start dating. Whenever Jeremy doesn’t want to do something sexual, he is referred to as gay by the Squip. This is further used as a general insult throughout the book.
