It could be possible that his real surname is Krumov (Крумов) which would follow the formation of surnames in Bulgarian language, and that Krum was just an anglicisation of it. Wood alone does not empower a wand. Presumably, its core material magically fuses with the wood it is embedded into, activating the wand's power. It also seems to become somewhat sentient, allowing it to bond to a Wizard who shares similar qualities. Magical creatures provide the core material; Mr. Ollivander's wands only contain Unicorn hair, Phoenix feather, or Dragon heartstring, though other wandmakers use additional substances. Harry's wand contains a Phoenix feather. A Phoenix is a mythical bird that continually dies by bursting into flames and is then reborn from its own ashes, an act symbolizing resurrection and purity. Krum's wand contains Dragon heartstring, and though a Dragon is often associated with evil and destruction, in many cultures it represents qualities such as strength, wisdom, purification, renewal, and power. The Unicorn hair in Cedric's wand represents purity, innocence, loyalty, and mankind's dual nature (evil and goodness). Fleur's wand confirms Ron's suspicions that she is part Veela. The hair forming its core belonged to her Veela grandmother, making Fleur one-quarter Veela. This wand's core is apparently unusual; it seems to surprise Mr. Ollivander when he finds it, and may reflect the Veelas' more temperamental and volatile natures. As seen earlier in this book, the Veelas' real appearance is far different than the images they can project. Though Fleur is certainly beautiful and alluring, we don't know much about her inner character; at the time we discover the core material of her wand, about the only exposure we have to her is her supercilious air when being forced to accept the "little boy" Harry as a competitor in the Triwizard Tournament. The Veela hair may also represent transformation, adaptability, and even deception and seduction. Being that the hair belongs to someone closely related to Fleur, it may also symbolize the power of family, generational legacy, unity, and loyalty. It could be possible that his real surname is Krumov (Крумов) which would follow the formation of surnames in Bulgarian language.

Krum is the name of one of the most famous Bulgarian rulers, who ruled in the Ninth century. Krum is, however, not a typical name in modern Bulgaria, being of pagan origin, and is in fact not a surname, but a given name. [18] At the time Bulgarian rulers were known by their first name, as they all rose from the same house/family (Dulu). Surly and moody, Viktor usually kept his own company and rarely spoke unless he needed to. Despite his fame, or perhaps because of it, Viktor was reserved and not fond of the attention he was paid because of his celebrity. However, he was known to be good company to those he allowed close to him, such as Hermione Granger, to whom he spoke " very enthusiastically" once they became friendly. Viktor became attracted to Hermione Granger shortly after his arrival at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and spent a lot of time in the library, trying to find the courage to talk to her. Eventually, following the announcement of the Yule Ball, he finally worked up the nerve and asked her to the Ball as his date. She accepted, but told no one except Ginny Weasley. Thus, their arrival at the Ball together caused a minor stir, as Viktor was famous and Hermione made herself look exceptionally pretty. Karkaroff was the Headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute. He treated his students like servants, making them steer the Durmstrang Ship while he stayed in his cabin. [14] He even encouraged an environment where intimidation and fear ruled over the institute, leading parents to see him as unprincipled and egotistical, and many of them withdrawing their children from the school as a result. [13] How did she know Viktor asked me to visit him over the summer?" — Viktor invites Hermione to spend the summer with him [src]Viktor is an international standard Quidditch player. He displays a perfect example of the Wronski Feint which impresses the spectators at the Quiddich World Cup. Krum takes Hermione to the Yule Ball as his date. The pair enter the Great Hall with the rest of the Durmstrang students, leading the group. Krum leads Hermione to the top table for dinner. He tells her enthusiastically about the Durmstrang castle and the students' life at the school. He has difficulty with Hermione's name, and keeps calling her 'Hermy-own'. He eventually progresses to pronouncing her name 'Herm-own-ninny'. After dinner, he and Hermione join the other champions on the dance floor for the opening song. The pair continue to dance together as the other students join them on the dance floor. Beginner warning: Details follow which you may not wish to read at your current level. Goblet of Fire [ edit | edit source ] Harry Potter's best friend, Ron, has a bit of a rough "spell" with his Harry Potter character wands, going through two during his time at Hogwarts. His first, a hand-me-down from his brother Charlie Weasley, was 12 inches long and was made of ash, with a unicorn hair core. Unfortunately for Ron, this wand was snapped in half during a run-in with the Whomping Willow. He attempted to fix it with Spello-Tape, but it was a lost cause, and he was forced to get a new one after multiple malfunctions caused him much grief and embarrassment. Dress robes: Viktor wore dress robes to the Yule Ball and later to the wedding of William Weasley and Fleur Delacour.

Viktor met Cedric Diggory in the chamber off the Great Hall after the champions names had come out of the Goblet of Fire. He respected Diggory's character and sense of fair play. He stated that Cedric had always been nice to him, even though he was from Durmstrang. While under the Imperius Curse, he used the Cruciatus Curse on Diggory in the maze during the third task. When Diggory was killed, Viktor seemed to be affected, since he spoke of him to Harry Potter before leaving Hogwarts. Very few spells are shown that can be performed in a controlled manner without a wand. These include the Animagus transformation and Floo transport. (Note that while this last does not require a wand, it does require other equipment, notably Floo Powder.) It is uncertain whether Apparition and Disapparition require the use of a wand, as no wand gestures are indicated; we never see any wizards or witches apparating themselves without a wand. (Side-along apparition, as when Hermione carries Harry, with his broken wand, does not count, as Harry is not then Apparating, but rather riding on someone else's spell.) House-elves, among others, do not have wands and yet can apparate, however, their magic has been shown to be of a different class than human magic. At Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley's wedding in 1997, Viktor complimented Hermione upon seeing her, but was disappointed to learn that she and Ron Weasley were "sort of" a couple. [5] Harry Potter [ ] File:Harry-Potter-1-.jpg Based on his name, Karkaroff was most likely from a Slavic country, which may have been either Russia or Bulgaria where surnames with the off -suffix are most commonly found. A skilled Quidditch Seeker, Viktor was selected to play for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team despite still being at school, and was widely regarded as one of the best players in the world. In 1994, he played in the Quidditch World Cup, and helped Bulgaria reach the final against the Irish National Quidditch team.As the Yule Ball approached, Viktor Krum finally worked up the courage to ask Hermione Granger out. This was when he revealed that he had been coming to the library and sitting near her for months because he was interested in her and wanted to go out. On the night of the ball, Hermione had spent hours straightening her hair and wearing a lilac color dress, and the two of them helped open the Yule Ball with a dance. Hermione tried to teach him how to pronounce her name in a series of hilarious, bungled attempts throughout the night. During the Fall term, Hermione keeps finding Krum in the library when she goes there to study. She finds this irritating, not because of Krum, but because of the gaggle of giggling girls who seem to follow him around, looking for autographs. Karkar is a name which was common among Kipchaks [21], a Turkic tribe which inhabited today's Kazakhstan during ca. 10-12c.; '-off' is a possessive suffix meaning '[son] of' in Slavic languages turning a given name into a surname which was also attached to non-Slavic names as part of Russification policies in the former USSR.

Viktor Krum ( Bulgarian: Виктор Крум; b. April– August 1976) was a Bulgarian wizard. He attended the Durmstrang Institute, and was also the Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team at the age of eighteen while still at school.

While it is unknown exactly when Karkaroff was born, he would have to have been born by 1964, to have been of age for his trial in 1981.

His membership in the Death Eater organisation and implementation — or, at least, continuation — of a policy of refusing to admit Muggle-borns to Durmstrang, indicated that Karkaroff was prejudiced against those of different blood status (though if so he had did not seem to have the level of sadistic, genocidal hatred possessed by other Death Eaters such as Bellatrix Lestrange and Yaxley). Nevertheless, Karkaroff was (at least during his time with the Death Eaters), something of a sadist, as he was noted to have assisted Dolohov in torturing Muggles, and even after he 'reformed' during his headship of Durmstrang, he encouraged an environment where intimidation and fear rule over the school, leading parents to see him as unprincipled and egotistical. Even his warm greeting to Albus Dumbledore when he came to Hogwarts was less proof of a civil nature, and more proof of his ability to play at civility when it suited him. This is supported by his later yelling at Dumbledore after Harry Potter's name came out of the Goblet of Fire, and even spitting at his feet. [14] While there is much talk in the seventh book about allegiances and awareness by the wands, it is never meant to be an indication that wands are alive. Like Muggle computers, the fact that a wand behaves in a particular manner may make it seem alive, but it remains inanimate and unthinking. A good indication of this is the way the Elder Wand shows allegiance to Harry; after all, it was not Harry who disarmed Dumbledore, but Draco. However, Harry is now carrying Draco's wand, which had itself transferred its allegiance to Harry when he wrested it from Draco. So the Elder Wand, rather than a specific person, apparently senses the holder of the wand that performed the successful charm as the one to whom it owes allegiance.Krum waits at the judges table by the lake, waiting for the second task to begin. Krum attempts to Transfigure himself into a shark for the task, to allow him to breathe underwater. He is partially successful, but it is not a good Transfiguration: he retains his human body, but has the head of a shark. His new teeth are positioned very badly for biting anything smaller than a dolphin, and he is in danger of harming Hermione as he tries to bite at her ropes. Krum is hit on the shoulder by Harry, who hands him a jagged stone; seizing it, Krum begins to cut Hermione free from the statue of the merperson. Once she is free, Krum grabs her around the waist and swims towards the surface of the lake. Krum is the second champion to return with their hostage. He is awarded forty points for the task. Bilingualism: Victor was able to speak fluent English alongside his native Bulgarian, although with a strong accent in the former.
