APP: Many in our network have praised Cradled for being such a moving and powerful portrayal of postpartum psychosis. How did it come about? Theatre is his “first love” and the setting for the second act of his career. His Bush Theatre stage show Red Pitch tells the story of three football-mad teenagers coming to terms with gentrification in their neighbourhood. It has hoovered up awards, including clinching Williams the most promising playwright prize at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

At best, your script is brought to screen, at worst (although there really is no worst) you have a spec' script... one that has been developed and championed by a dedicated BBC script editor and executive producer team. Each year around 10 to 15 writers are partnered with independent production companies.Throughout the year, the writers attend masterclasses and workshops with established television writers and production teams while developing and writing their script. The aim is that the writer’s series or serial will be taken into full development by the BBC. Nessah Muthy is a multi-award-winning, three times Writer’s Guild nominated, writer for screen and stage.

More headaches for Stephen

Knowles performed the show in Edinburgh, where somewhat inevitable comparisons were made to Fleabag, the one-woman show that catapulted Phoebe Waller-Bridge into the arms of Hollywood. Written by award-winning Nessah Muthy and directed by Stef O’Driscoll How To Save The Planet When You’re A Young Carer and Broke peeks into the life of a young working-class carer having to make decisions between life-saving responsibilities at home and being dedicated to save the planet in times of climate emergency. But what adds another layer of glitter to this already sparkling show, is that it treats its child audience with respect. So that when the big issues arise, they are not shied away from. Daniel Ings as Owain, the champion of Dumnonia who is an experienced but dishonest veteran warrior and one of Mordred's three protectors. [9] One day the façade finally fell, it all got too much and at a health visitor appointment I fully broke down. The health visitor was supportive as was my GP, but in the end I said I just think I need to go to A&E. From here my local mental health crisis team took over, they came out every day, twice a day, and they were amazing. Knowing that someone else was coming was so reassuring. Family members and friends were also hugely supportive, they sat with me, effectively on suicide watch.

Nessah: There are elements of my experience that were almost psychotic, like the mirror stuff that I showed Maia experiencing in the film. There were mini hallucinations that I started to develop, and it’s difficult to unravel whether they were indeed hallucinations or just really strong intrusive thoughts. As a child, I spent time around adults experiencing psychosis so I had personal experience of it to draw upon as well. Muthy nails the way sensory experiences can burst through the dementia haze… The temptation of the play is to look away. The strength of this play is that we cannot’ I compare it to Greek mythology,” she explains. “You meet a character at the beginning of what’s going to be a really difficult journey. There’s a part of the character that maybe knows that, but human hope, belief and innocence carry her towards quite a dark ending.”Eccleshare is currently being pulled in the direction of the latter, however. He has just penned an episode of Criminal Record, an upcoming Apple TV+ crime drama starring Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo.

Throughout the programme, there had always been an atmosphere of camaraderie amongst all the writers, but here it was felt more than ever. Observations and questions were offered in a genuine and supportive way. This is Imaginate’s 30th year of children’s theatre festivals, and I have been to shows in nearly every one of them. But it is many years since I saw a show that so thoroughly took my imagination out, dusted it off, carefully sprinkled it with fairy dust – and then set it ablaze! Muthy’s dramatisation… is touching and emotionally challenging -an excellent piece of thought-provoking theatre’ Additionally, Nessah is a member of the Coronation Street writers’ team and to date has written 40 episodes, one of which has been recently nominated for an RTS North Award 2023. Please note both the film and the interview contain references to suicide and intrusive thoughts about babies. Please take care when reading/viewing.She’s also juggling a regular job on Coronation Street (she’s scripted 22 episodes of the ITV soap and counting) and a slate of her own projects. More on those later.
