Description

The Jaybird app is intuitive and easy to use, with pre-made sound profiles letting you jump into the action (Image credit: TechRadar) The most important thing with any wireless earbuds is how they fit — and that's even more true when it comes to workout earbuds. If they don't stay in your ears and you're bobbing and weaving, squatting and planking, then you're doomed.

The combination works a treat and means, while you can get better sounding true wireless, the Jaybird Vista are the best set available for their target audience. Design Vista 2 have been designed with outdoor sports in mind, and in my experience of using them on the trails, and in the mountains, they are the best true wireless headphones for running. You won’t find some noise-cancelling or ambient sound features here, like the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless, which uses external microphones to play outside noise inside the drivers, keeping you more in tune to your surroundings. We’re told that Jaybird wouldn’t have been able to keep the dimensions down if it included these kinds of features, which holds true when we consider the bulkier earbuds of those other models. Our verdict

Who should get the Jaybird Vista?

If you're looking for a pair of serious workout earbuds, the Jaybird Vista 2 are my winner. They have a more secure fit, and they are really rugged, so there's less chance of your sweat killing them. Their tiny charging case that comes with a lanyard is a nice bonus, too. The Jabra Elite 7 Active buds are a significant update over the Jabra Elite Active 75t and offer more personalised sound and ANC, better fit via the ShakeGrip coating and even improved call performance thanks to the three-microphone-per-bud setup. If you aren't too keen on wing tips/ear hooks, the Elite 7 Active are your best option for running headphones. The Vista 2 offer noise cancellation along with Jaybird's SurroundSense – this is an ambient aware mode that lets in some outside sound to keep you aware of your surroundings. Thanks to the physical controls rather than touch panels, they're easy to use while exercising, and total battery life stands at a very respectable 24 hours. The app makes it easy to see battery status but it's 8 hours from the earbuds (or 6 with ANC or SurroundSense mode) + two additional charges from the case (Image credit: Josh Ross) We didn’t get the opportunity to battle particularly windy conditions as we were hit with a mini heatwave during our tests, but any help to keep the wind at bay without compromising the bud design can only be a good thing in our book.

During exercise is where that performance really matters and there’s certainly no let up on that front. We used them for indoor and outdoor workouts, and the audio quality overall was great, feeling like a bit of a step up compared to the original Vista earbuds. We’d be inclined to say the similarly priced Jabra Elite Active 75t offer a little more in terms of power and detail but the Vista 2 are still really great sounding earbuds for exercise. Jaybird may have been one of the first in the sports headphones market, but it's far from the only player. Pretty much every major headphone manufacturer now has a wireless sports pair to rival Jaybird's, and most of them are a little cheaper, too. So why should you consider Jaybird over the likes of Sony, Bose and JBL? Audio quality isn’t as good as what you’ll find on more expensive true wireless sets, like the Sony WF-1000XM3 and Beoplay E8 2.0, but it easily matches – if not beats – some similarly priced true-wireless earbuds, like the Apple Airpods and Samsung Galaxy Buds. Better Microphone quality – 4 Beamforming microphones on the Vista 2 combined with wind-proof guard material allows for better audio quality than the original VistaThey aim to differentiate themselves from key rivals, including the Apple AirPods (2019), Samsung Galaxy Budsand the Powerbeats Pro by offering buyers an unashamedly fitness focused design and wealth of custom features that marathon runners and gym goers will love. Buds Battery claim is 8 hours for regular mode, or 6 hours with noise cancellation modes (from 6 hours regular mode on Vista 1) Additionally, you can turn ‘Auto-Pause’ off or on in the menus, as well as change the language of the voice in your head. So things like connection notifications can be in English (US or UK), Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, or Mandarin. And you can turn off those voices entirely, and simply use tones instead.
