Obviously, the correct setup here would have been to use a microphone with it. Which, is what I did the next day for a similar (also still unpublished) walk-through. So let’s talk about that. And of course one of the best things about GoPro is the range of accessories (both official and third party) you can utilise to get even more creative with your filming. For those who want something that’s simply the best in terms of build quality, brand and performance, the Rode SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone is a wonderful option. However, if you want to go for a budget microphone for the audio recording of your motorcycle adventures, then the Vidpro XM-L Wired Lavalier Condenser Microphone is the perfect choice. That being said though, if you want to save a bit of cash, the reduced price of the Hero 9 makes it super tempted and is still and incredible GoPro for vlogging if 5K or super slow mo in higher resolutions isn’t a game changer for you. For those new to travel vlogging (and presumably video editing) the 360 stuff can be confusing to work your head around editing wise, so you’d be better off with the standard Hero 9.

Obviously the proof in how good a GoPro For Vlogging really is are the real life examples of videos created by everyone with them. In case you’re wondering about the weight, it comes in at 50g on the dot with my battle-scarred scale: Even though the fact the Media Mod had its own set of inbuilt mics, the thing that a lot of vloggers focused in on was that the Media Mod allowed a clean and contained solution for attaching external microphones – which opened up a whole range of options. The big downside is the length of the wire from the camera to your lapel, however wireless lavalier mics free this up and even allow you to have crystal clear audio commentary a long distance away from the camera. Note that these max resolutions don’t impact recording however, so you can actually still record at 4K even when outputting at 1080p. For example, you can see that here where I’m showing the clip properties and you can see the TV is showing what the GoPro is showing live, while recording. You can see the cable going to the TV from the GoPro I’m holding. I know, that’s confusing. Sorry. Of course you dont have to jump in right away and splurge on these – you can always see how you get on with the standard GoPro audio before investing in the Media Mod and an additional external microphone setup. Boasting up to 5K at 60 frames per second, super slow mo 2.7K at 240 frames per second and even 4K at 120 frames per second – if you’re dealing with action or slow mo footage this is the GoPro for you.

Obviously the advantage of the Hero 9 or 10 though is already having the inbuilt, front facing screen, so no need for the LCD Mod on that one.

What are the Three Types of Wind Muffs?

And there are plenty of options to choose from for all setups and of course budget, but here are some of the most commonly used ones; Shotgun Mics Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Obviously the easiest fix would be to enable wind reduction on the GoPro audio but I'm really trying to avoid this where possible. Except... I am now asking questions about the wind noise and how to minimise it. Previously I had been running the GoPro Hero 7, on a chest mounted gimbal with small adhesive dead cats covering the microphones. I had disabled wind reduction to avoid the muffled sounding audio and that was working great.

In the case of the Video Micro, with the dead-cat installed it’s a giant fluffy beast, and gets in the way of the picture. I’m sure you could trim it or configure a different dead cat, but that video issue aside – it worked just fine.In my case I used it both with the Light Mod, but also some microphones as I’ll show below in the next section. Finally, on the form factor, you’ll notice it added those two cold-shoe ports. One on the top, and one on the side. These are for mounting any standard accessories you can think of. Now the GoPro range have never been known for their epic audio quality – and although the Hero 7 upped the game and the Hero 8 built on this even more, for serious creators audio was still a huge barrier for using a GoPro for vlogging, especially over the likes of the Canon G7 X or Sony A6400with their option for external mics and flip up screens.

Once you’ve got your microphone plugged in, you’ll want to ensure the microphone type is selected correctly within the GoPro settings. These are located by swiping down from the top, then go into Preference > Input/Output and choosing ‘Audio Input’. It’s here that you’ll see these options: With the release of the Hero 8 it has became apparent that as a company they’ve seen the potential market in using a GoPro for vlogging. Once you unplug the Media Mod, the normal preset settings return to whatever you had them set prior to plugging in the media mod. So you can see that here: Another awesome feature is the Horizon Levelling mode (borrowed from the GoPro MAX) which makes for super steady footage. This allows you to customize different presets with different Media Mod microphone settings. There are three shotgun mic settings: Here’s a Pro Tip for you: Notice how the groove at the bottom of the Media Mod only goes to one direction? This is the direction you should put the screw in from. Sure, you can technically screw it from either side, but this makes it easier to get the screw all the way in. Down at the bottom of the screen is where you can control things. There’s the familiar gallery icon, and then an eye icon. That eye icon is how you toggle between the two monitor/live recording modes. The first GoPro to introduce Hypersmooth stabilisation, this is the GoPro that really upped the game and where a GoPro vlog setup really came into consideration.
