Hank Hogan and Pierre Lafayette, stereotypically American and French, were two of the Fleet's best pilots and an inseparable double-act. Pierre was primarily a pilot, Hank more a mechanic.

There is evidence that the Spacefleet spaceport on Earth is west of Formby in Lancashire on a semicircle of land built into the Irish Sea by landfill. The character has been described as very popular with the readers, rivalling in popularity the series protagonist himself. [8] Mekon's popularity has inspired the designs of later British fictional villains, such as Doctor Who's Davros and Cybermen. [8] Analysis [ edit ] Digby (Albert Fitzwilliam Digby) was Dan's Wigan-born batman. Rotund and sometimes bumbling, he provided comic relief. He was fiercely loyal and the only character apart from Dan to appear in every story. His favourite recreation was sleeping and he was fond of traditional English food. His nearest relative was his Aunt Anastasia, after whom Dan named his spaceship. In 1990, a strip entitled Dare, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Rian Hughes, was serialised in Revolver. It presented bleak and cynical characters and was a not-too-subtle satire of 1980s British politics, from the perspective of the defeated left wing of the Labour Party. Spacefleet had been privatised, the Treens were subjected to racist abuse in urban ghettos, Digby was unemployed, Professor Peabody committed suicide, and Dare's mentor Sir Hubert Guest betrayed Dare to the Mekon and his quisling British Prime Minister, Gloria Monday (whose appearance and demeanour appear modelled on Margaret Thatcher). Ultimately, Dare destroys London, the Mekon and himself through a smuggled nuclear weapon. The last episode appeared in Crisis, following Revolver's cancellation. This version was not popular. [ dubious – discuss] The Planet [ edit ] Venusian vehicles were depicted as being technologically more advanced than those of Earth. South of the Flamebelt the Therons had applied their technology to peaceful agricultural purposes including dedicated agricultural land and flying machines. North of the Flamebelt the Treens perfected low friction/low energy consumption means of transport including vacuum tube transport (Electrosenders) for long distance travel.Martial Pacifist: As shown in "Voyage To Venus", While Dan shall battle if he has to, he shall only do so when he has exhausted all other peaceful options; trying multiple times to make friends first and be as cordial as possible. He'll use Ju Jitsu if he has to, but he would rather have it so every one gets along with each other. Wars and Harry Potter in the modern era, in Britain at least). In fact Dan Dare was so popular during the 1950's that

report on the continued hunt for episodes of the Dan Dare radio show broadcast by Radio Luxembourg in the 1950s Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett wrote Dan Dare into his song " Astronomy Domine", from the band's debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, with the line "Stairway scare, Dan Dare, who's there?".The Eagle became immensely popular with people of all ages. Schoolchildren across Britain smuggled copies into school. The Lancet even reported on a doctor who read the Eagle on his ward rounds. The Mekon was the ruler of the Treens of northern Venus, although he was ousted from this position at the end of the first story and had no fixed base of operations. He was created by scientific experimentation, engineered for very high intelligence. As such he had a swollen head containing his massive brain and atrophied body, and moved around on a levitating chair. He typically invented new superweapons in the pursuit of his goal: the domination of the universe for the purpose of scientific research. In some stories he also sought personal revenge on Dan Dare.

Cabaniss, Nathan (22 April 2023). "10 Best Grant Morrison Comics You Haven't Read (But Need To)". ScreenRant. His episode listing, based on information from various sources, features here on downthetubesand a straightforward listing of episodes compiled by Jeremy Briggs is here. Sir Hubert Guest, Controller of the Space Fleet, sent Dan on missions, and occasionally joined him. He was a veteran pilot, having been on the first mission to the Moon and led the first mission to Mars. He was based on Hampson's father. The Swarm: The Red Moon turns out to be the home of nothing more than some bee-like insects that can swarm on a planet and strip it of all its vegetation. Many early stories in The Eagle were written by Chad Varah, who was later to go on and found The Samaritans.Transplanted Humans: The Atlantines turn out to be the descendants of humans kidnapped from Earth by the Treens twenty thousand years ago. In 2018, a downthetubes source kindly provided us with an audio of another episode for “The Lost World on Mars”, which we have published here on downthetubeswith the kind permission of the Dan Dare Corporation. Find out more about the episode here. A copy has been shared with the British Library. The Quisling: The tertiary villains in Operation Saturn are the Rootha, the native aristocracy of Saturnia who serve the real ruler, Vora, who was of interstellar origin. The secondary villain is the human Blasco, who plots to similarly serve as Vora's Quisling emperor on Earth. (The primary villain is, of course, Vora himself). Instead the industry's growth seemed to be in adult-orientated comics. [4] IPC's successor Fleetway Publications attempted to gain a foothold in this market with the fortnightly anthology Crisis, which was enough of a success for editor Steve MacManus to be given the go ahead for a monthly companion title, Revolver. MacManus selected Peter Hogan as editor, and the pair began to search for stories. Grant Morrison approached them with an idea for a revisionism Dare story had had conceived in 1987,; the promotional opportunity of both having a Dan Dare strip to tie into the 40th anniversary and having Morrison - who had recently broken through in the American market with Arkham Asylum and Animal Man for DC Comics - was not lost on the Revolver team.
