Living with Crohn’s or Colitis can have its challenges. But you can still get the most out of life. We can help you with information on coping with symptoms and other everyday issues. Computerised tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can show which part of the bowel wall has inflammation and ulcers. Crohn’s can affect all layers of the bowel wall, while Colitis only affects the inner layer. An LFT measures the levels of enzymes (proteins that speed up chemical reactions in the body) made in your liver. These enzymes can leak into your blood when the liver is damaged.

To undergo a capsule endoscopy, you will need to swallow a small capsule that has a tiny camera inside. This camera creates images of the inside of your small intestine. It can show signs of Crohn’s disease in your small intestine that cannot be seen with an EGD or a colonoscopy. if you didn’t follow any instructions exactly as given (don’t hide anything since many things can affect test result) An LFT also measures levels of albumin. Albumin is a protein made by the liver which helps keep blood flowing through your bloodstream. A low albumin level can be a sign of a problem with your liver but can also be due to inflammation in other parts of the body (such as the gut).Low vitamin D levels. People with IBD are at risk for a low level of vitamin D. The reasons for this are unclear, but some studies have shown that having low levels of vitamin D could be part of triggering a flare-up. Close monitoring of inflammatory bowel disease activity promotes early identification of mucosal inflammation, enables rapid intervention, and treatment optimisation, which is associated with better long-term outcomes. Gaining control, reaching deep remission, and preventing flares, are considered priority treatment goals for IBD patients. The gold standard for assessment of mucosal inflammation is endoscopy and therefore not suitable, available or sustainable for routine monitoring of disease and so faecal calprotectin serves as a valuable objective non-invasive biomarker to monitor intestinal inflammation. Testing faecal calprotectin at home delivers immediate, actionable results, and promotes Patient initiated follow up (PIFU) for faster intervention, without the need for utilising hospital or laboratory resources. During a sigmoidoscopy, the specialist may take some small samples, called biopsies, and remove small polyps. You should get a letter telling you everything you need to know about the scan, including if you need to have contrast dye.

The UGI series includes a variety of imaging tests to create a complete picture of your small intestine. If further tests still can’t explain your symptoms, you might have another condition. Your healthcare professional will advise you about next steps. Upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy: Your doctor threads a long, thin tube called an endoscope through your mouth and into your throat. An attached camera allows your doctor to see inside. During an upper endoscopy, your doctor may also take tissue samples. Cox SR, Lindsay JO, Fromentin S, et al. For example, they may find granulomas. These are small groupings of cells that can only be seen with endoscopy. They usually point to the presence of Crohn’s disease. DEXA scans can show if your bones have become thinner and weaker than normal – a condition known as osteoporosis. People with Crohn’s or Colitis have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis. Having steroid treatment or low calcium levels can also increase the risk of weak bones. If you are taking steroids long-term, it is recommended that you have a DEXA scan every year. See our information on bones . Computerised Tomography (CT) or Computerised Axial Tomography (CAT) scans

Eur J Nutr. 2020;59(3):1115-1121. doi:10.1007/s00394-019-01972-z Liver function tests: This blood test can show if some indicators of liver function are unbalanced. An LFT is a blood test that shows how well your liver is working. It can also help diagnose rare liver complications of Crohn’s or Colitis, such as Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). PSC is a condition which causes the tubes (ducts) carrying bile from the liver to the gut to become inflamed.Magnesium - this helps turn the food that we eat into energy. If you experience ongoing diarrhoea, you may have low levels of magnesium.

During the colonoscopy, air is usually pumped into the bowel to help the specialist get a good view of the bowel wall. You may fart during the colonoscopy; this is completely normal so don’t feel embarrassed. After the colonoscopy This isn’t caused by inflammation. With IBS, your bowels look normal on imaging tests like CT scans and in biopsies. It differs from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), of which Crohn’s is one type. IBS is sometimes called a sensitive gut. Symptoms include feeling gassy, changes to your poop like diarrhea and constipation, and belly pain or bloating that may get better after a bowel movement. Your poop could also be slimy from mucus. Your symptoms may also come and go. Celiac Disease You will be asked to take barium in different ways depending on the part of the gut that is being looked at. Like Crohn’s, this is an inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammation from UC affects your large intestine, or colon, and rectum. Crohn’s, by contrast, can happen anywhere in your gut. UC can cause sores called ulcers in the lining of your colon. It and Crohn’s both can leave you tired and your poop bloody or slimy. With ulcerative colitis, you may poop more or need to poop right away. That also can happen with Crohn’s. But Crohn’s is more likely than UC to cause complications like fistulas, strictures, and abscesses. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) As well as looking at the lining of the bowel, the specialist may also take small pieces of bowel lining (biopsies) to examine under a microscope later. The specialist may also remove polyps (see above) to look at in more detail. The colonoscopy will usually last around 30 to 45 minutes.

You may be asked to only drink clear liquids for the 24 hours before your test. If you can see something through the liquid, such as words in a newspaper, it is considered ‘clear.’ Some examples of clear liquids are tea and coffee without milk, water and apple juice. Drinks such as orange juice and milk are not ‘clear’ and should be avoided. When preparing for any diagnostic tests, speak with your doctor to find out how to prepare for each upcoming test. This could include avoiding specific foods, fasting, avoiding certain medications or supplements, avoiding smoking, or avoiding intense physical activity. MRI scans use strong magnets and radio waves to create images of the inside of the body. MRI scans do not use X-ray radiation. The MRI scanner looks like a long tube or tunnel. You will be asked to lie very still on a moveable table, which slides slowly inside this tunnel. An MRI will usually last around 20 to 30 minutes. You may be given a contrast dye before the scan, which helps show more detail of the gut on the scans taken. The contrast may be given in the form of a drink to swallow, an enema in your bottom or injected into a vein in your arm. You should get a letter telling you everything you need to know about the scan, including if you need to have a contrast dye.
