The second challenge in Crime Scene Kitchen is called the Elimination Bake. Whoever comes in last place this round will unfortunately be eliminated and go home. Looking at the cakes’ flavors, it was clear that Natalie and Luis wowed the judges. Their chocolate layer with bananas foster made Yolanda swoon. Overall, their cake was the clear winner on flavor. The final dessert round challenge was a napoleon. While all four teams guessed the dessert correctly, one clue made the difference. Only Thomas and Cathy and Natalie and Luis made the classic Napoleon, the correct dessert. Both of those baking teams moved onto the showpiece round.

While the FOX baking competition focused on solving the sweet clues, a few elements helped Natalie and Luis rise to the top. Their classically trained pastry skills gave them an advantage from the start. All five teams opted to bake an upside down cake. So once again, it does seem like the teams have been able to figure out what is going on in the kitchen. But are they right? That is the question.

With Natalie and Luis, they brought their Vegas flare to the cake. It was very, very clear that this cake was Yolanda’s birthday cake. From the decorative slice as a cake topper to sprinkles reveal in the top layer, everything about this cake said it was a celebratory cake. Throughout the season, the baking teams adapted to solving the clues. While some teams were more successful than others, this baking competition is unlike other food television shows. Combining execution, knowledge and skill are the keys to earning the victory. In case you missed week or season one, here’s the premise of the show: each week there are two challenges. In both challenges, before the baking actually begins, each team has a chance to ‘investigate’ the kitchen. There are dirty dishes, used utensils, things in the fridge, and definitely some things to fool you (quite a few this week) and throw you off guard just a bit. Luis: Like the geode cake. She got super excited with the geode cake. "It's a geode cake. It's a geode cake." I was like, "Are you sure?" Natalie and Luis shared how they put together the concept for the cake. It was meant to be a party. From the top layer with its sprinkles and its surprise center to the middle palate cleanser to the indulgent bottom layer, it was an extravagant feast. Or, as Luis said, “it is a journey through cakes.”The flavors could be molded in a variety of ways and each of the finale cakes took the flavors in different directions. Two teams had three very different layers and Thomas and Cathy offered variation on chocolate. When Yolanda Gampp revealed that the final Crime Scene Kitchen showpiece would allow the baking teams to interpret the flavors in any way that they wanted. Natalie admitted that she had to ask over and over if she had free reign. It was finally her moment to “let that flare out of the box” and put it to good use. While everyone wishes for the glory and pastry crème, the pastel Thunderdome is unpredictable. Former success does not guarantee that moment in the winning spotlight. Did the pressure become too overwhelming? Did the Crime Scene Kitchen winner shine during the dessert round? The crime scene kitchen dessert this round was a semi-naked spiced carrot cake with coconut cream cheese frosting. The modeling chocolate and vegetables left out were for molding decorative corn, peas, and tomatoes to top the four-layer confection. Of the four carrot cakes, Cathy & Thomas were the only ones to correctly frost their cake as "semi-naked", thus winning the main challenge as well. Luis & Natalie correctly guessed it was a naked cake, but decided to show off their skills and make a "farmer's market bushel" cake decorated with not only the modeling chocolate vegetables but wood planks and barrels, complete with hoops. It was an impressive cake, but not the decoration the judges were looking for. In the first "dessert round", the teams are tasked with re-creating the dessert made in the crime scene kitchen after three minutes to analyze the clues left from the mess in the kitchen. The first round mystery dessert was a Boston cream pie, which deceptively enough, is actually a cake. The clues that led to this dessert were the ring of chocolate and almonds, indicating the sides were covered in almonds, the spiderweb template for the icing pattern in the ganache on top, and the bowl with remains of pastry cream in the sink.
