Los Angeles is a big place with many homicide detectives and it’s eminently plausible that Dabney Coleman’s character wouldn’t have heard of Lt. Columbo. In fact it might be *likely* that Dabney Coleman has never heard of Columbo, as he has never lost a case, and presumably our hero detective is actually making cases and putting our bad guys in jail. Richard, skilled counselor that you are, I suspected that you’d beat me to the punch about Creighton’s phantom lawyering “skills”. And it’s even worse than that! Columbo has entered and passed along a message to the judge that Creighton’s girlfriend has been killed. This, of course, has no relation to the case being argued. But naturally, the judge declines to wait for Creighton to wrap things up, and she immediately invites a mistrial by shutting down his closing argument so he can get the news. But to someone who has a gut feeling that she may have been used to manufacture an alibi and as an unwitting accessory, the time of the murder is the most important thing on her mind, not the circumstances that any normal, completely innocent person would be concerned with.

While giving a toast, Crawford drugs Gabe, then takes his body up to his rooftop rehearsal place, which happens to be atop a trapdoor to a freight elevator. He makes it look like Gabe was there rehearsing; With the concert about to begin, Crawford starts the freight elevator, then makes it into the concert hall in time to begin conducting before the elevator reaches the top. When the elevator doors open, Gabe's unconscious body is pushed over the side and falls to his death, landing in front of a late-arriving couple.
