Mudguards are key to keeping dry – or drier than you’d otherwise be – in typical British conditions. That’s especially true in winter when water tends to stay on the roads for longer. If you’re riding year-round, make sure you have some of the best bike lights to keep you safe too. If your bike has rim brakes, you’ll usually need long-reach brake callipers, especially if you want to use mudguards with tyres that are 25mm or larger.

the rear mudguard to be mounted at the top of the seat bar without tools, using rubber straps. If, despite the disc I agree that the SKS post sales support is excellent so I may get in touch with them, then again I may simply accept that the guard is simply fixed which is somewhat ironic given the failings of the mk1. The little flaps are fairly useless and I certainly don't bother with them. Forward of the front wheel/brake the little flap just does exactly that, flap around uselessly. Same goes for the rear wheel in that the little flap just adds weight without offering any protection as the majority of spinning water gets dumped at the brake bridge. These mudguards are useful for commuting bikes, especially where clearance might be an issue because of frame design and/or wide tyres. The simplicity of fitting makes them attractive, and they can be whipped off in a minute too. While these mudguards don't provide 100% protection compared to full-length options, they do keep a surprisingly large amount of spray off.

Our Websites

Regarding the length - there's no pleasing anyone. I've ridden behind hardened Audaxers with flaps almosrt down to the ground and still gotten spray in the face. Speed, depth of water and proximity all play a part, so it's a pointless exercise. I use mudguards primarily to keep me clean/dry, and to prevent the need for excessive washing of expensive outer layers. Given all this and the five-year warranty, it's really hard to look past these guards. The availability of spares is a plus too, and my personal experience of SKS's warranty dept is second to none – they really look after customers. Value You have to like the mountain bike-ish look though, and not be worried about spattering people behind you. The fact that full-length mudguards can only be fitted to frames with the necessary mounts and clearance does limit them, but there are plenty of bikes designed to accept them. Most common are those that fall into the touring/Audax category, with a variety of frame materials including the most common: steel, titanium and alloy. It’s also possible to buy a carbon fibre frame with the necessary eyelets and clearance for these mudguards. Mountain bike-style mudguards will fit almost any bike, and offer loads of clearance regardless of frame design. On the flip side, they offer less protection than other types of mudguard. Your feet will still get wet, your bike gets no protection, and they don't shield the rider behind you.

The granting of a best price is not combinable with other promotions (e.g. "free articles) from Bike-Discount. Rather than the more conventional V-shaped stays, the Commuter mudguards have parallel twin stays, with Secu-Clip fittings front and rear, designed to release the stay from the fitting if anything gets jammed between the ‘guard and the tyre. VELOFLEXX - A new addition to the Velo family! The VELOFLEXX mudguard set combines the stability of a fixed mudguard with the flexibility of a clip-on mudguard. The VELOFLEXX bridge allows the rear mudguard to be mounted at the top of the seat bar without tools using rubber straps. Improperly installed or repaired products (always follow the instruction guides for any product set-up or installation)I nor any members of my club get paid to use SKS RBL's. I have paid for the three sets I own, prior to this set for review. I have these and they are very good...BUT in fixing the previous problem when the guards tended to become unclipped they have made the fixing a bit too good. I have one guard that will come off but the other one will not unclip for love nor money. I must have spent an hour last night (with assistance as well) and we simply could not remove the front wheel longer guard from its clip. In the end I had to resort to removing the clip (with guard attached) by carefully unscrewing the brake bolt and then threading the clip through the bridge (which was all a little awkward with the guard in place). Clip-on mudguards usually don’t wrap as much of the wheel as full-length mudguards, nor have the sides or front rubber flap. This means they don’t keep as much rain and spray off your body or bike. However, they do keep most of the water off and can make a huge difference on wet roads. They can easily be removed and stored in the garage during the summer.

Think mudguards aren't cool and that they'll spoil the lines of your bike? Think again. Even professional cyclists fit mudguards to their training bikes through the winter. Spray protection depends on the tyre and mudguard width you use, but the 45mm tyres on my test bike were dwarfed by the generous width of these ‘guards. The SKS Raceblade Long is a highly-regarded accessory, and this latest version (called the Mk II in some quarters) is an evolution of an instant classic. In 2012 Dave gave the original Raceblade Long (RBL hereafter) four stars, saying they were “absolutely miles better than nearly every other solution for your road bike”. I agree. A new addition to the Velo family! The VELOFLEXX mudguard set combines the stability of a fixed mudguard with the flexibility of a clip-on mudguard. This mudguard profits of a continous profile. Therefore it’s only compatible with disc brakes.

Mudguards stop water and dirt from your tyres spraying upwards over you, your bike, and anyone riding behind. If your road bike doesn't have mudguard mounts, there are still a lot of mudguards options available to you.

If you find an item at a lower price with another commercial internet retailer, you will receive it from us at the same price, provided the conditions listed in the link are met. The stays are finished with a plastic cap, but can be cut short to avoid toe overlap, then the cap replaced. The silver plastic mudguards have two full-length parallel clear slots within them, which can help to show how dirty the underside is, and they also have good-sized flaps at the rear of each one. I've broken several bits, generally through being an idiot. SKS customer service always came through, replacing broken parts free of charge every time. There's a five-year warranty for manufacturing defects as well. The great customer service makes SKS owners fiercely loyal to the brand and its products – pretty much everyone in my local club now runs RBLs, and whether or not they can be mounted is a key consideration come new bike time. This is useful, because the mudguards themselves aren’t especially long, particularly the rear, which is quite short. It’s not one you’d want to follow on a wet day commuting into the city.

SKS Chromoplastics Mudguard Set 65mm 28

A new addition to the Velo family: the Veloflexx 55 mudguard set made of high-performance impact-resistant plastic Ultimately, products are only as good as an individual finds them. I look forward to the mk3 version For the last three years I've clipped the RBLs on the moment it got remotely misty hereabouts. I've had them on and off my steel bike literally hundreds of times, and recently added mounts to a new carbon disc-braked acquisition. Tell us what the product is for and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it? Mudguards are also a vital courtesy on group rides. Sit directly behind a bike that’s not fitted with mudguards on a wet ride and you’ll soon realise just how much water tyres can spray up. A long rear mudguard, preferably with a flap, keeps spray out of the face of the rider behind you. Many clubs and riding groups demand mudguards over the winter.
