It can sew through garment leather and other soft leathers easily with a leather needle equipped. Heavier leather is more problematic but not entirely impossible if you go slow. Is this machine good for a beginner? Avoid trusting opinions where users say they’re ideal for leather as you’ll be disappointed. For those projects I recommend you saving your money and investing in an industrial sewing machine unless you want to stitch thin leather occasionally. The Singer 4432 is not only easy to setup but super easy to use as well. If you’re a beginner or switching machines, the learning curve on this machine is minimal.
