Description

The battery in the headphones is not replaceable but Sennheiser estimates it will maintain at least 80% of its original capacity after 30,000 hours of listening, which is 27 years of listening three hours a day, meaning it is never likely to need replacing. The following test groups have been updated following TB 1.6: Wired Connection, Bluetooth Connection, and Wireless Connection (Dongle). The revamped Sennheiser Smart Control app offers further means of customising noise cancelling with Wind ANC or pausing music automatically when the Transparency mode is activated. There’s a three-band setting to create a customised sound, Bass Boost and Podcast sound modes.

Note: You must max out the volume on the headphone itself, otherwise you will find the source amp will need a lot more power than is needed. Other than its predecessor, they are build out of plastic. This doesn't have to be bad. There is plastic and then there is plastic. My HD 580 Jubilee are also mostly made out of plastic and are still standing strong. I just hope, that the plastic used in the Momentum 4's can withstand sun exposure, because I'm mainly going to wear them out and about. Only time will tell. The year 2022 has been the one of the flagship headphone launch. The likes of Sony, Master & Dynamic, Technics, Bowers & Wilkins have all brought their latest ideas to market, and with the Momentum 4 Wireless, we can add Sennheiser to that list, too. Cabin pressure is also significantly reduced. With the Momentum 3, the pressure though is not too bad is noticeable and does alter the sound. The Momentum 4 Wireless suffers from virtually no pressure and the sound remains consistent throughout the adaptation and cancellation. Unless you stayed inside a cave for the last century, you must be accustomed to Sennheiser. A company that’s been in the business for more than 75 years now, who sold hundreds of millions of headphones – even billions if you count the earphones – both for audiophiles and sound professionals. In fact, some headphones, like the HD650 or HD-25 have been in the brand catalog for more than thirty years now, that’s almost as old as I am!

Frequently asked questions

The foreboding guttural vocal stylings alongside whispered close-up utterances throughout Mudvayne's Di g are some of the most challenging ways to test these cans' sense of timing through the low end, and the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless never shy away from the task. I really like the Bluetooth connectivity of M4. The Bluetooth pairing was very easy with my iPhone, LG V30 phone as well as my laptop. The M4 can connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time. I can play music on iPhone then switch over to the V30 without having to disconnect the iPhone. I do need to pause the music on iPhone before using the V30. The setup of the Sennheiser Smart Control App is very easy and smooth for the Android phone (V30). However, it took me several attempts to connect the Smart Control App to M4 on the iPhone.

Some headphones you like, these transducers you might love. I personally wont give it away again, it became my current reference standard. Conclusion and alternatives The Sony WF-1000XM4 delivered good ANC, but not best-in-class –look to the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 for the top ANC around. And while Sony worked hard to improve this by adding a new, bigger driver unit to deliver richer audio, clearer vocals and better levels of immersion – as well as an integrated processor and three mics per earbud compared to the two mics in the WF-1000XM4s – we weren't blown away. Obviously the Momentum 3 has no touch controls, simply mundane 20th century technology called buttons. I do actually prefer the Momentum 3’s transparency button over the Momentum 4’s pinch. In my opinion it’s both easier to use and I like the tactile feel that lets me know what mode I am in. My main reason for getting the Bluetooth headphones is for meetings and phone calls (working from home most of the time) plus the mobility. Therefore, Bluetooth connectivity and sound clarity are more important to me.Imaging is superb. I am able to pinpoint the instruments with ease. I can even distinguish if something is coming from closer or further away. With a simple zoom gesture, the user may adjust the intensity of noise cancellation at will without using the app. By the way, the ANC cannot be turned off completely when listening in active mode. However, that’s not a problem either, because you don’t hear any noisefloor or notice unnatural isolation sensation. Incidentally, the Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 4 wear very comfortably and neither build up pressure on the ear cups nor give the user the feeling that it could get too hot. The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless comes with a hard case in matching color. (Photo: Sennheiser) We call it continuity: Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 4 sound The only real design flourishes here are the fabric on the external aspect of the headband (available in two colorways) and Sennheiser's trademark S-in-a-rectangle branding at the base of the headband. It's demure to a fault, especially when those ear cups are devoid of any accent whatsoever – and it's the reason we removed half a star from the rating here. But if you'll only glance at the overall star-rating we awarded these excellent Sennheiser noise-cancelling over-ears, you'll see we forgave it all… Sound is very good, comfort is impressive, and the extensive battery life makes them the perfect solution on the go. Add to that effective noise-canceling, adaptive apX, plus a comprehensive app, and you get a solid alternative to the classic AirPods Pro or the Gemini.

Customer Demand: If there’s high customer demand for a new iteration, particularly if there are desired improvements or features not present in the True Wireless 3, a new release could meet this demand. But that does not mean neglect of superior Sennheiser technologies. A 42 mm fullrang driver being engineered in best tradition is transducing signals into sound. Most listeners will probably rely on Bluetooth to deliver the material. No worries about sound quality when chosing this convenient option: high-quality codecs AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive are integrated. Both iPhone and Android users can therefore benefit from high quality. The integrated mic has a fair recording quality. We used an estimated value for LFE as the processing job is recording LFE at -3dB by default, which isn't reflective of its performance. To account for this, we measured LFE at -6dB, as this is the point in the response that we feel is closest to the true LFE. Even though there isn't much bass in the recording quality, it's not as bad as the graph indicates. We are looking into this issue, though. Your voice sounds fairly clear and easy to understand. Charging time - Approx. 2 hrs for full charge; 5 min charging for up to 4 hrs playtime; Remark: Ambient temperatures >30°C may lead to extended charging timesThey have effective noise-cancelling that can meaningfully reduce rumbles, fan and road noise, and do a reasonable job on higher-pitched tones such as voices or keyboard taps in an office. They can’t quite match the very best from Sony or Bose, but they aren’t too far off. The adaptive system automatically turns down the noise-cancelling when in quieter places and they handle wind noise very well – something that trips up some competitors. Battery time - Up to 60 hrs music playtime via Bluetooth and with ANC (test condition: iPhone, mid volume level)

This isn’t to say that the Sennheiser headphones underwhelm – they’re strong when dealing with crowd noise, hushing voices, as well as handling traffic on a busy day in central London just fine. They impress in a variety of environments. But whether listening in their ANC or Adaptive modes, the Bose and the Sony deliver a quieter performance; there remains a degree of ambient noise that I can hear through the Sennheisers. The clarity of the Transparency mode is very clear and detailed, up there with the best, and doesn’t affect the quality of the audio. The Momentum 4 Wireless’ mids are slightly forward, while the Momentum 3’s midrange is more linear. For the latter this does not translate to a more natural or better sounding midrange. The Momentum 4 Wireless’s midrange is slightly more refined and poses more accurate timbre. cough... … You serious?! The Momentum 4 Wireless has literally 4 times the battery life of the Momentum 3! While this never posed an issue for me as my use case was pretty static, my daily bus commute, I can see this being an issue for those who use the Momentum 3 for the entirety of their day such as office workers or students, not to mention those who travel. Besides the increased battery life, the Momentum 4 Wireless also charges quite a bit faster (charge level vs playtime) as well.

Sennheiser’s fourth-generation cans shine sonically, despite their plain looks

Call quality is decent, although not up to the WH-1000XM5’s levels. Noises were suppressed well and didn’t impact the clarity of my voice; the person on the other end of the line said traffic comes across as slight rumbles. A very good performance, and the type you’d expect from an over-ear pair at this price. Enhanced EQ Settings: Users have expressed a desire for more comprehensive EQ settings. While the existing settings are fairly robust, a more expansive range could allow users to further customize their listening experience, tailoring the audio output to their specific preferences. It’s worth noting that while the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless series already offers an impressive suite of features and excellent audio quality, these enhancements could make the fifth iteration an even more compelling option for audiophiles and casual listeners alike. Wind noise is also handled well, the design of the headphones reducing the effect of the turbulent air as it passes by (something that does affect the WH-1000XM4). The strength of the noise cancellation does tend to go up and down, though; initially, I thought this was as a result of the “adaptive” part of the noise cancellation. But it seems the headphones’ mics can be a little erratic, unexpectedly letting in noise and then closing up the seal. Sonically – where are we? With the old, wonderful Sennheiser values. There is no effect-heavy show here, but basic audiophile virtues. Competitors like to spice up the bass – Sennheiser relies on a decent fundament refraining from any exaggeration. Because a fat bass would also kill a lot of information in the midrange. We experienced highest transparency, some analytical resolution and an amazing pace. Everything about the Momentum 4 feels light. Like a sports car made of high-tech materials.
