Feelings of loneliness cut across all age groups. About 5% of all adults report feeling lonely 'often' or 'always', with the number rising to 10% for 16-24-year-olds. 16 The cool thing is that the more you read, the better your memory gets. Think of your brain like a field of grass. The more you walk down a particular path, the more beaten down it gets, and the easier it is to take that same path the next time. When you read a lot, you're beating down your memory pathways.

In June 2018 we had a significant increase in the number of children achieving the ‘expected’ judgement within the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. It is my belief that this is down to developing an embedded culture of reading for pleasure and through providing meaningful writing experiences for our youngest children. The Power of Reading* will continue to be enjoyed within our school. Our children deserve the very best start to their early literacy and I know we have found that in the Power of Reading*. Read our reports into the benefits of reading for pleasure and empowerment (BOP Consulting, 2015) and of creating a society of readers (Demos, 2018), or explore more reading stats and facts below. Skills and Learning Which do you think you'll absorb more from? Which do you think is more likely to help change your habits ? Books, of course! There is much to be welcomed in the updated framework, but we also want to ensure that schools and settings interpret this new guidance with a wider view about what we know works in the teaching of reading, particularly at the early stages. Please note Power of Reading in the Early Years is now known as Closing the Vocabulary Gap in the Early Years Thankfully, one of the key benefits of reading is that it helps you practice concentrating on just one thing at a time. In fact, one study discovered that 69% of employers are looking to hire people with "soft" skills, such as effective communication.

Daily story time is recommended across all Key Stages, in which the class can simply enjoy a book together without interruption or analysis. Reading for Pleasure is fundamental to a school’s culture and curriculum in ‘creating readers not just pupils who read.’ Help develop classroom provision to raise engagement and attainment in language, vocabulary, reading and writing. Why is reading important? As the 17th century English writer Joseph Addison once wrote , "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."A good tip for increasing writing skills a lot in a short span of time is to select tough piece and work on decoding it. You can do this in the form of guided reading / shared reading or just on your own. Both will work to increase your reading fluency, which will in turn make you a better writer. Analytical/Logical Thinking Skills Vezzali, L., Stathi, S., Giovannini, D., Capozza, D., & Trifiletti, E. (2015) The greatest magic of Harry Potter: Reducing prejudice Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 45(2), 105-121.] ↩ Children who read books often at age 10 and more than once a week at age 16 gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly. 9 Prioritise teaching older early readers to read independently so that they can access the increasing reading demands of the wider curriculum.

Model how a skilled reader draws on the range of comprehension strategies required to make meaning from a text rather than focussing on one domain in isolation. Comprehension is an outcome, not a skill to practise, and so it does not make sense to divide up the elements of skilled reading and teach them separately. In our fifty years of research and work with schools, we have long known the benefits for all children of making reading for pleasure a core part of the curriculum for all children. In July, the update to the DfE Reading Framework was published, and we are pleased to see this recognised more fully in this revised version, alongside the continued emphasis on phonics to support decoding.Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation," said Dr. David Lewis, the cognitive neuropsychologist who conducted the study. The best part? You can get all these benefits of reading books while enjoying some fantastic entertainment.
