In my opinion the UberLite is best for athletes and adventurers who need to take their ultralight gear to the next level, who can’t sleep comfortably on closed-cell foam pads like the ZLite Sol (see below), and/or who care about space and bulk just as much as weight. Examples: On the other hand, Thermarest NeoAir XLiteweighs 12 oz. Even though it’s 3.2 oz heavier than the Uberlite thanks to Thermarest’s innovative design, it’s still one of the lightest sleeping pads on the market (I have a table of other alternatives belowso you can get the main idea). If you have spent a night on the XLite or the warmer XTherm, the UberLite will feel very familiar. All of them:

NeoAir UberLite: Ultralight option for fast-and-light types who adventure mostly in summer and occasional shoulder season conditions. Get the UberLite if you rarely see temps below 40 degrees F and are willing to treat your pad very carefully (and probably patch some punctures) in exchange for the lightest and smallest inflatable pad on the market. The big sister of Uberlite (if you will), Thermarest NeoAir XLite, strikes the perfect balance among the weight, durability and insulation. The XTherm, as its name suggests, is the warmest of the three NeoAir sleeping pads. Its R-value of 7.3 stands up to even extreme winter adventures with overnight lows below 0 degrees F, especially if you layer a closed-cell foam pad beneath it. It’s not strictly necessary for those chilly shoulder-season nights that hover around freezing, but it wouldn’t hurt. I noted it was a lot shinier than my Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm so had some concerns I’d slide around on it but these fears were unfounded. On the nights I’ve tested it, I’ve stayed put all night and slept really well. Featherweight: Weighing just north of half a pound, the UberLite sets a new standard for ultra lightweight comfort. This is unfortunately where I have some negative things to say about the UberLite. Where the XLite uses stronger 30D fabric top and bottom, the UberLite uses 15D fabric, which seems not quite up to the challenge. The UberLite is the newest addition to the NeoAir lineup, and the lightest. There isn’t another pad in existence that can match its blend of featherlight weight, tiny size, decent comfort, and 3-season-ish warmth. The only real downside, in my experience, is the UberLite’s difficulty with reliably holding air. Hopefully Therm-a-Rest improves this in future versions, because this pad is otherwise excellent. With its compact design and feather-like weight, Uberlite is great, but as you might guess there are some trade-offs here, it’s not the most durable air sleeping pad on the market, it’s made of low denier (15D Nylon) fabric therefore if you decide to go with the Uberlite you need to be extra careful.

While the UberLite looks like Therm-a-Rest’s three season NeoAir XLite and four season NeoAir XTherm sleeping pads, it’s made with lighter weight fabric and less insulation to save weight. While this does reduce its durability, the UberLite is also the quietest and least crinkly sounding sleeping pad in the NeoAir product family. That fact alone may make it worth upgrading to for existing XLite and XTherm owners who want a lighter weight summer sleeping pad. My experience with the XLite, XTherm, AXL, and now UberLite is that these pads make less noise with age and when paired with older shelter floors. Repeated folding of the pad seems to soften the materials, and normal use seems to buff the fabric coatings. Warmth

Tip: If you need to patch your UberLite sleeping pad — and you probably will — I find GearAid Tenacious Tape stays on better than the included patch kit. I’ve had to patch my UberLite twice in six nights of use. Lesson learned, spread weight out evenly and carefully! Punctures: In six nights of using my UberLite pad, I punctured it twice! Both times I was sitting cross-legged inside my bivy (which acts as a ground cloth) on what I thought was relatively smooth ground. Apparently sitting put too much pressure on a small area of the pad. Now I know better and am careful to only lie down with my weight spread evenly. It’s typical for ultralight gear to require careful treatment, but this pad requires VERY careful treatment and you should expect that punctures are likely.
