Hail to the King! Not content with being built around a series of cult classic films, The Evil Dead franchise grew over the years and now consists of movies, comics, games, and a TV Series. Most doctors say the discomfort is completely harmless, but a few say that young children may increase their chances of becoming nearsighted when they put too much strain on their eyes. They point to studies that have linked high incidences of myopia to cultures that encourage reading and formalized education among their youth. Much later in the novel, Genly informs Estraven that in the Ekumen, women seldom seem to become mathematicians, musical composers, inventors, or abstract thinkers. “But it isn’t that they’re stupid,” Genly adds, digging himself in deeper. (He doesn’t include “science-fiction writers” in that list, but in 1969, most people would have. That same year, Le Guin herself was forced to use the byline U. K. Le Guin for a story published in Playboy, so readers wouldn’t know that she was a woman.) Moustafa Bayoumi is the author of the award-winning books How Does It Feel to Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America and This Muslim American Life: Dispatches from the War on Terror. He is a professor of English at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. He is a contributing opinion writer at the Guardian US.

And of course ALL Adams, like you and me (and all my negligently disobedient friends!) will see our Edens forever blighted - like our dying planet - or so it will seem to us, since that first Kurtzian day of wrath. The first book in the brand new Dawn of Fire series, this effectively takes place as the Indomitus Crusade begins. If you haven’t already read Dark Imperium , this is definitely the place to start with the Era Indomitus stories. There’s lots about Guilliman and masses of great new lore, but also all sorts of interesting arcs featuring the Imperial Navy, the Inquisition and the Administratum. Of course, The Left Hand of Darkness is literally a guidebook to the fictional world of Gethen, also known as Winter. The book takes the form of a travelogue, roaming around the nations of Karhide and Orgoreyn. And by the time you finish reading, you might actually feel like you’ve been to these places, to the point where you kind of know what their food tastes like and how the people act. But for me, and for a lot of other people, The Left Hand of Darkness also left us with a map that leads to another way of telling stories. But do they both want the process to continue for long? The reality is that both also have incentives to restart fighting. Hamas because, after years in which the world turned away from it and in which oil-rich Arab states began making peace with Israel, the organisation’s vicious assaults have made the world pay attention to Palestine once more. Israel because Netanyahu knows that, after his failures helped pave the way for the horror of 7 October, he faces being ousted from office and prosecuted for corruption as soon as the conflict comes to an end.Indeed, the last words of Kurtz’s imperialistic manifesto are, as an afterthought, “Exterminate all the brutes!” Conrad was writing in the very last years of the 19th century. But it is impossible, in retrospect, not to think that the “voice” he writes about wasn’t already born in the very heart of Europe; that Heart of Darkness wasn’t a foreshadowing vision of the horror and destruction that would, only a few decades later, cover the European continent. The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.

We see the mi Tired eyes can lead to headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and light sensitivity,” says Ostermann. “So Mom, thanks for the warning.”All this is so obviously true that the people of the region, and most of the world’s governments, will inevitably breathe a collective sigh of relief if Thursday’s 10am start to the truce, now delayed by at least 24 hours, passes off smoothly. But it feels equally clear that the significance and durability of the truce should not be overstated. Its terms are extremely contingent. All sorts of things could go wrong, hour by hour, handover by handover, and become pretexts for renewed brutality. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between "the greatest town on earth" and Africa as places of darkness. Collects Army of Darkness (1992) #1-3, Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes (2004) #1-4 and Army of Darkness: Shop Till You Drop Dead (2005) #1-4, Army of Darkness vs. Re-Animator (2004) #1-4, Army of Darkness (2005) #5-7 and stories from Tales of Army of Darkness (2006). Eye strain from reading in the dark could temporarily make it difficult to see well, which could be unsafe and uncomfortable. So it isn’t something to ignore. But eye strain isn’t a dangerous condition long term, and it generally fades away when you rest your eyes. To all depressives, here, today and everywhere, at least know someone else has trod this path. The real darkness was never a matter of light.

I haven’t actually read either of these, but as Darius points out in this interview Revenant Crusade is set post-Great Rift, after the events of The Devastation of Baal. Meanwhile the synopsis for City of Light specifies that it’s set “deep in Imperium Nihilus”. If you want to continue exploring the Blood Angels, these seem worth having on your list (see the Blood Angels list earlier for where they fit in the timeline). The best we can say at the moment is that playing outside seems to be beneficial to the eyes and that perhaps young children should study in a good light to avoid straining their eyes. As for adults, all these studies were conducted on children whose eyes were still developing, so if you still want to read under the covers by torchlight then it’s unlikely to cause you any problems. Of course now that you’re old enough to decide your own bedtime, you probably don’t need to. It’s quite easy to find irrelevant information and use it as “data”. Well, it’s not data, it’s just findings. Findings are what is used to get closer to an answer. To say that cultures that encourage reading have a higher chance of being myopic is like saying gay men have a higher chance of having sex with other men.

What to read/watch before the Army of Darkness Comics?

Our first crossover is with Herbert West from H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, well known for the film Re-Animator and its sequels. Heart of Darkness is a groundbreaking text that digs into the dark depths of the human psyche. And while it is written in sumptuous, almost marmoreal prose, it searches for sensations underneath language, nightmares underneath clear thought, the unutterable, silence, darkness. In short, only read Heart of Darkness with a double Polish vodka or a potent antidepressant close at hand! The point at which the old ‘5 minutes to midnight’ 40k setting started to change was when Games Workshop started building up to the Great Rift, the huge Warp storm which has split the galaxy in two. Big events included the fall of Cadia, the troubled birth of Ynnead (the aeldari god of the dead), and the miraculous resurrection of Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines. For the sake of ease I’ve referred to this whole era as the Gathering Storm.
