What is beyond dispute is that D’Amato was the architect behind three Hall of Fame boxers (Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and Mike Tyson) and the man who mentored a trainer in Teddy Atlas who may well join them all in Canastota (he was nominated for the first time this year). The quartet was immersed in a revolutionary program created by D’Amato that melded meticulously detailed boxing techniques with a vigorous psychological regimen that forced his students to confront, explain, and, hopefully, control and conquer their deepest fears.

If you’re interested in being a fighter or just have a love for shadow boxing, boxing, sparring or fighting, either read this book or learn about Cus. Graceffo, Antonio. "Non-compromised Pendulum: A book about Cus D'Amato's style, by Oleg Maltsev and Tom Patti". World of Martial Arts . Retrieved 20 October 2018. Fear is the greatest obstacle to learning. But fear is your best friend. Fear is like a fire. If you learn to control it, you let it work for you. urn:oclc:record:1393045385 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier ironambitionmyli0000tyso_f9h7 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/s25grqkdgtd Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780399177033a b Tursunbaeva, Kanykei. Da Capo Press. pp.17–20, 26, 51. ISBN 0-306-80669-X. When Mike Tyson was released from the Tryon School for Boys, he moved in with Cus D’Amato. They developed a strong bond, one that went beyond boxing. He became Tyson’s legal guardian after Tyson’s mother died. He was the father Tyson never had. One of the more interesting aspects of this book for me personally is the detailed comparison of Cus’s boxing style to the Neapolitan style of Spanish swordsmanship. Dr. Maltsev through his research located treatises from the 17th and 18th centuries or which contained much of the information contained within Cus’ style. The president of the National League of Professional Boxing of Ukraine, Mikhail Zavyalov [ ru], generally praised the book. However, he is ready to argue with a fragment of the book where it is said that without the instinct of the killer a boxer will not become king in the ring. In contrast, he refers to the current boxers Vasily Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk, who in his opinion, do not possess the killer instinct. [19]

Mike Tyson will always be a fascinating character in the annals of sports history. Those who know his story know that trainer/mentor Cus D'Amato played a big part in his rise to heavyweight champion of the world. As such, one would think that a book about Cus from Tyson's point of view would be a pretty solid investment. Unfortunately that does not happen, as Tyson's rapid-fire, unorganized approach make for a scattershot read. It is often said that he who controls the heavyweight title controls boxing. For several years during the late 50s and early 60s legendary boxing trainer and manager Cus D’Amato held a grasp on the division as Floyd Patterson became a contender and, eventually, the youngest boxer ever to win the title. He was also the first to reclaim the title, having lost it briefly to Ingemar Johansson. When Cus D’Amato first saw thirteen-year-old Mike Tyson spar in the ring, he proclaimed, “That’s the heavyweight champion of the world.” D’Amato, who had previously managed the careers of world champions Floyd Patterson and José Torres, would go on to train the young Tyson and raise him as a son. D'Amato died a year before Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. The Greatness of the Sword” by Don Luis Pacheco Narvaez written in 1605 and the treatise from 1582 by Jeronimo de Carranza title “Philosophy of Arms” that details the use of Spanish Corners which is about controlling the geometry on the ground are just two examples from the book. Every boxing trainer understands the importance of their fighter controlling distance and angles and were documented hundreds of years ago. The author clearly presents the scientific methods, documents and explanations used to analyze the core Cus’ style. This book is a serious read and incredibly informative. I found it to be very insightful and I highly recommend it. The authors hard work and diligence shine throughout the book.Admittedly, it would be hard not to recognise the face emblazoned with the huge tribal tattoo, seen in hit movie The Hangover and an impressive 10 films in the past three years. Doran, Niall (4 September 2018). "The World's First Book About Cus D'Amato's System". Boxing News and Views . Retrieved 23 September 2018. This book explains why mental training for boxing is crucial and uses quotes and strategies from Cus himself to illustrate their importance. D'Amato reminds me of a character in an Ibsen play, Solness in The Master Builder. He too, practised this visualization technique to become the master builder. So, there are others out there who feel the pull of destiny. A curious, driving call full of power and powerlessness at the same time. The fire burns into you, but at the same time you are thrall and a pawn to this destiny that looms over you. Even as he lay dying, Cus was adamant about giving Tyson boxing tips so that the young man could fulfil their shared quest of winning the heavyweight championship of the world.

The book is filled with examples of D'Amato and his "mind over matter" philosophy. I'm not much into hocus-pocus, but if it helps you succeed, then it is good. Here's a short passage that gave me the chills. I wonder if everyone gets these moments or these moments only come to the happy few? When Cus D'Amato first saw thirteen-year-old Mike Tyson spar in the ring, he proclaimed, "That's the heavyweight champion of the world." D'Amato, who had previously managed the careers of world champions Floyd Patterson and Jose Torres, would go on to train the young Tyson and raise him as a son. D'Amato died a year before Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. His whole objective of fighting was hurting, destructing,” he adds. “Every fight I had Cus would be talking about breaking ribs, exploding livers, pushing a guy’s nose into his brain. The book comprehensively describes D'Amato's system based on two decades long scientific research. [22] [23] Authors claim that D'Amato's system is applicable in and out of the ring. Different chapters of the book explain the genius of D'Amato and his psychological, philosophical and methodological approach of bringing up a champion. [13] In the frameworks of the research, the scientific expedition was held in the homeland of D'Amato, Southern Italy. [24] [25] See also [ edit ]I have no idea," the boxer says. "I think about that myself. How did he know? Out of all the kids he's been around all his life, how'd he know I'm the guy that's gonna do it?" Gonzalez, Martin. As it’s released for free on Google Books, here’s a review of Lightning Rod That Strikes Faster Than Lightning written by Dr. Oleg Maltsev Cus knew he had won a victory, not only over his adversary but over himself. He had faced his fear and refused to allow it to get the better of him,” wrote Mr. Heller. His style is rooted in that experience. Cus knew that for a boxer to be successful he had to be able to control his emotions, control his fear, and control his mind so he could access a higher state of consciousness when facing his opponent. The details of this story were also described by Larry Sloman in a talk with Oleg Maltsev. Anderson, Dave (August 3, 1987). "Sports of the Times; 'Time for the New Trainers' ". The New York Times. Boxing historian, founder of Boxing Hall of Fame, Inc (Las Vegas, Nevada) Steve Lott reviewed the book stating that the piece is something which was never done in the history of boxing. In his words, Cus would be impressed that the author understood that 80% of boxing was mental and emotional, with the physical being a small part. However at same time Steve notes that the book is way above the level of average boxing readers and the concepts might be too advanced to comprehend. [17]The mental game is even tougher. It’s a game of chess; your opponent can literally make an infinite number of moves and you have to predict and respond in real time to what they’re doing. Sports Illustrated review by Kaelen Jones states that Non-compromised Pendulum serves as a short and concise testament of authors’ commitment to adequately portray Cus D’Amato. The review includes authors’ quotes and striking ideas of certain chapters of the book, saying that it is an unconventional read with myriad lessons throughout it. It also points out the fact while D’Amato is remembered as one of the most influential boxing trainers, his doctrines were taught in secret and mostly unknown. [21] Content [ edit ] Lightning rod that strikes faster than lightning itself” itself is the second book by Oleg Maltsev in a series of books written about the legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato. If you want to know what a real man is, what it takes to be a man, this is the book. It’s not about machoism. It’s about standing up for what you believe in, being helplessly passionate about something, to be a lifelong student of your discipline, to do what’s right beyond the expectation of others, to help others regardless of your personal gain, to instill lifelong values in the disgruntled youth, to have dreams beyond material wealth, to push the boundaries of human capabilities/psychology, to pursue excellence.
