It's a bit of a dip from Def Leppard's last two albums, Pyromania and Hysteria, but how could you legitimately compare anything to them? Pyromania was totally bad ass, and Hysteria is one of the most legendary albums ever released.

The chorus pedal'd clean guitars are staples of the Def Leppard sound, almost as much as the heavy synth drums and the "Def Leppard Chorus". Decent tune. Fluttery guitar solo from Collen's magic fingers. Elliot name drops Stairway To Heaven. Bold choice. Tonight gives Adrenalize a much needed boost in street cred with Pyromania / High 'n' Dry feel musically. White Lightning I know it’s a terrible cliche, to say this is what he would have wanted ... We genuinely did think Steve would have wanted us to carry on. He wasn’t in a great place when he died. He’d been through rehab. He was a self-proclaimed alcoholic. We knew that. He would say, in his more morbid periods, ‘You guys would be better off without me’. We would rally around and go, ‘No, we wouldn’t – we don’t want to be without you’.”

We never made it into a headline, you know?” says Elliott, in advance of the release of Def Leppard’s latest album, a collection of orchestral reworking of their greatest hits titled Drastic Symphonies. The coroner’s report, dated February 27, cited the cause of death as “respiratory failure” due to consumption of “an excess of alcohol mixed with anti-depressants and painkillers”. What haunted Elliott was the call he made to Clark on the day before he died. “I got his answering machine,” he said. “That killed me for weeks. If I’d spoken to him, maybe it would have changed the next twenty-four hours…” Elliott might not have cried when Steve Clark died, but he did as he said that to me. Or so the media felt. The truth was more complex. It’s almost as if there were enough people in the world for both Def Leppard and Nirvana to do perfectly well.

Playing five-a-side with Clannad was a long way from Def Leppard’s roots in late-1970s British heavy metal. Though Elliott has always been wary of the connection, Def Leppard are regarded as key movers in what would become known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, or NWOBHM. Loud, squeezed into tight trousers and entirely silly, it was a movement that also included Iron Maiden and which would inspire Metallica (their drummer Lars Ulrich had a teenage obsession with NWOBHM). Def Leppard, it transpires, were very much up for working with Taylor Swift too. The love-in blossomed and, in 2008, these two acts from very different worlds appeared together on the County Music Television show, Crossroads. They collaborated on Swift’s Love Story and Def Leppard’s Photograph, one of the big singles off Pyromania. We finally got on the right path. I think there’s more to come. We can do it differently. It’s our best makeover and reinvention. It’s the same guys for the last 32 years. We know each other. We know how it works. That’s another similarity with U2. As a creative unit they know their limitations. That’s the great thing. We finally became the band we secretly wanted to be.”Take “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” as an example. Although the title pretty much sums up the idea behind the tune, the band is wise enough to recognize that when it comes to love songs, what gets said matters far less than how it gets said. Thus, the heart of the song is its melodic development, the way Joe Elliott’s vocal builds from the breathy, low-key opening verse to the soaring, full-throated harmonies of the chorus. It’s so perfectly paced that you hardly need to hear the lyrics to understand what the song is saying; the sound says it all.

A powerhouse of a song. It was the very last tune that Steve Clark played live with Def Leppard, appearing on the MTV music awards in 1989. It was in January 1978 that Steve Clark joined Def Leppard, five months after the band formed in Sheffield. At his audition, he played the end solo from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird. It was so good that Elliott said, without hesitation: “He’s in.” Offiziellecharts.de – Def Leppard – Adrenalize" (in German). GfK Entertainment Charts. Retrieved 2 April 2019.

I’d known for years, but I didn’t know him at all. He had everything, yet he had nothing. You do your best to help. Naturally, euphemisms for sex also appear as talk of rhythms. These songs should bring Van Halen to mind — the David Lee Roth era specifically — with "Heaven Is" telegraphing Eddie Van Halen's famous guitar stylings and "Make Love Like a Man"making apassing reference to " Just a Gigolo." They’ve continued to surprise fans with their latest two records, Elliott feels. Diamond Star Halos – the title from a lyric by Marc Bolan – is luxuriant glam-pop. And Drastic Symphonies brings orchestral pomp and ceremony to the Leppard songbook. What a great position to be in as they steam forward into their sixth decade.

Type Def Leppard in the box under the ARTISTA column headingand Adrenalize in the box under the TÍTULO column heading. This song has it all, huge riff, impactful solo, a bad ass "Def Leppard chorus", and tons of energy. I always envisioned this song was the epicenter of what it meant to be Def Leppard - the bridge between all the songs written prior and all those that followed. Tear It Down represents the changing of the guard from Steve Steamin' Clark to Vivian Campbell (an amazing guitar player in his own right). Generally speaking, it’s time to worry when the term long-awaited gets appended to an album. Long-awaited doesn’t just mean that the band in question took its sweet time delivering the disc; usually, it’s industry code for “bloated and overblown.” Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliot launching his own beer, called Down 'n' Outz, to coincide with the release of the band's latest album My Regeneration in 2010.
