As the outstanding balance, plus the interest now form part of your payable balance they will attract interest Toshiba has pinpointed its picture performance as an area of growth, developing the TRU Picture Engine. It breaks down the TV’s picture performance into three parts: micro dimming, motion control and upscaling.

We drop down further to some standard-def daytime TV with Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators. The blurring is still present and the detail is understandably wanting, but that’s what we’d expect at this price. The 50UK3163DB’s taste for spectacle is let down somewhat by its colour handling. The screen just doesn’t seem able to support a wide enough colour gamut to ‘keep up’ with its intense brightness, leading to some bright tones looking a bit thin and washed out versus some rivals. Similarly, the picture can clip subtle shading out of bright HDR and even SDR highlights quite noticeably thanks, presumably, to its preference for presenting HDR as brightly as possible rather than tempering it to the screen’s specific brightness capabilities with serious HDR tone mapping. The available picture modes include Cinema, Natural, Dynamic, Sports and Game alongside their HDR versions. Cinema, Natural and Dynamic are your best bets, but they come with caveats. It works well, but it isn’t without some niggles. The far-field microphone on the device recognised prompts to increase or decrease the volume, but wouldn’t respond to muting the audio. Asking Alexa to change the channel created an awkward period of silence, and trying to open Netflix led to her to telling me facts about Netflix. Perhaps I just didn’t make myself clear, but there do appear to be limitations to how much you can ask of the digital assistant.

Dolby Atmos audio offers a premium entertainment experience that helps you feel a deeper connection to the movies, shows, music, sports, and games you love. Hear what you’ve been missing with an immersive experience like no other. The 50UK3163DB’s HDR efforts aren’t the only way it makes an unexpected mark on the affordable TV world, either. Its native 4K pictures also look remarkably sharp and detailed. So much so, in fact, that they make the efforts of even some recent LCD TVs we’ve seen from the usually dependable Samsung look soft and undefined by comparison. (Though its upscaled HD pictures, by comparison, look a little soft and noisy.) Again, you’re essentially neutering the HDR and wide colour experience to achieve the most natural results. But really you’re just working with what this particular TV can give you, and the results are much more enjoyable than trying to push HDR to places this TV can’t go.

Of course, not everything you watch is available in Dolby Vision. In fact, only a minority of 4K Blu-ray discs and streams support it. But at least the 55UL7A63DB is ready and able to benefit from its picture boost when and where you can access it, whereas most similarly priced TVs are not. For instance, as well as handling the industry standard HDR10 system, the 55UL7A63DB can also play the broadcast-friendly HLG system (as used by the BBC iPlayer app for both live and catch-up HDR streams) and Dolby Vision. This provides extra scene-by-scene picture information to help TVs deliver better HDR pictures. Fortunately, this TV is not as shabby for sound. Toshiba has used Onkyo to tune its speaker system of two down-firing drivers plus a sub, powered by a total of 42W of amplification. It supports both Dolby and DTS audio codecs and there are plenty of options in the sound menus to tailor the audio to your tastes. Toshiba's TRU picture technology provides smooth, upscaled and more detailed viewing. 4K means a clearer picture - with more pixels on the screen creating crisper images on the beautiful 55-inch screen. You can also upscale a wide variety of non-4K content, for more refined images that feel more lifelike and immersive. While the 50UK3163DB isn’t anything special when it comes to handling dark images, it sure stands out with the intensity it brings to both bright parts of dark scenes, and full-screen bright HDR content. In fact, when it comes to the bright end of the light spectrum, it delivers arguably the most aggressive HDR performance in its class. The most intriguing feature is the Alexa integration, which could prove to be the UL5A’s MVP alongside Dolby Vision. Called Toshiba Connect, it allows for interaction with the Alexa interface built into the system’s core. Picture presets offer plenty of picture variety, but all come with a string or two attached. For instance, the Dynamic preset gives the best shadow detailing, especially with HDR, but it also results in noise and some strained-looking colours. TRU PICTURE TECHNOLOGY Finally in the negative column, motion handling is only solid rather than great, even with the Tru Motion feature active.

If you’re after an affordable TV that does 4K and HDR, you could do worse than the Toshiba55UL5A63DB. The smart apps are good, it comes with Freeview Play, and if you’re interested in voice control then the Alexa Toshiba Connect receiver comes bundled with the TV. Would you be lost without this electrical product? If your product can't be repaired, it will be replaced with no excess to pay.

The Toshiba 55UL7A63D does distinguish itself from budget rivals with a relatively direct, front and forward tone, however. In addition, its helpful Dolby Audio modes reduce the muffling effect and make voices – especially male voices – sound more convincing than they often do on budget TVs. This isn’t “Works with Alexa”, which requires an external speaker – although it does need an external receiver to work. Hook up the Toshiba Connect to a USB port and it performs like any other Alexa device, with the Alexa logo popping up on the screen when she’s in use.
