Description

One of our favourite types of bamboo screening, this slat (or split) fencing by Papillon is made of high quality bamboo and looks fantastic in the garden.

If you're seeking a temporary solution for an event or a season, reed or bamboo screens might be more suitable due to their lighter weight and easier installation. A great feature of this bamboo screening is how customisable it is too. Many people are often hesitant to buy bamboo fencing as they’re not sure how well it can be cut to size and whether you can paint it or not. Fortunately, both of these are possibilities. Bamboo reeds have a naturally occurring coat of wax that repels moisture and protects the poles from deterioratingThere are plenty of ways bamboo can be used as screening and one of the best ways is to use bamboo screening plants. Our favourite bamboo plant for this purpose is the Phyllostachys bissetii which can reach 3 metres (sometimes even 5 metres) in height if not pruned. This makes it the ultimate bamboo screening plant. The cost of different screening materials can vary. Reed screens are often more affordable, while bamboo and willow screens might be a bit pricier. Split bamboo screening can be cut to your desired length by using a pair of wire cutters. Simply cut the wire at the length you desire and fold the wire to seal the end. Can I attach screening to my neighbours’ fence? Most bamboo screening will arrive rolled up which makes it super easy to install. From the start of the fence, roll out the screening. Once happy that it’s looking straight, you can use cable ties to go around the bamboo slats and attach them to the eyelet screws. It’s usually easier if you have someone helping you – especially if you want the screening to be taut. Each slat in the bamboo screening is tied together using strong horizontal galvanised wires every 20cm. There are no breaks in the split canes, meaning it can easily be installed and fixed to posts, walls and garden fences using u-nails, screws, or cable ties.

The type of screening you need depends on your specific goals, preferences, and the intended use. Here are some common scenarios and the types that might be suitable: If your neighbour owns the fence and you have not been granted permission from your neighbour to do so, you are not allowed to attach or nail things to the fence. If a wall is a party wall and owned by both sides, then you can fix screening to the wall. It is always best practice to discuss your ideas with your neighbours and come to an agreement. How do I stop neighbours looking into my garden? If you're looking to enhance the visual appeal of your garden while adding a touch of style, any of the natural screeningoptions (reed, bamboo, or willow) can work well. Choose the one that best compliments your garden's overall aesthetic. You could also look at artificial screeningfor a more tropical style and year round colour. We’re also big fans of the bamboo screening plants by Pappilon as it gives your garden a luscious feel.Whilst many slatted bamboo fencing is held together by what can be considered as toxic glue, Homatz use a strong galvanised steel wire instead. This has two benefits; the aforementioned fact that they don’t need to use a glue that is potentially toxic to pets and wildlife and also because it adds much more durability to the bamboo screening. You should bear in mind that this bamboo plant tends to lose its vibrant colour in the winter due to cold, crisp winds although once Spring hits, they’ll provide a luscious foliage. Fargesia Murielae grows to a max height of 4m with a max width of 2.5m is an extremely dense variety, a perfect bamboo for screening or for hedging. Known as Umbrella Bamboo, this originates from China and will tolerate sun and wind and will also grow well in partial shade, forming a dense elegant hedge. Side note: bamboo is easy to cut so if you wanted to decrease the height of your screening, use a measuring tape and saw off the ends. Sanding the cut ends down will ensure they’re not too sharp.
