Be aware of the potential for trapping fingers between the closing sections. Remember some of the important parts are inside where they cannot be seen. If you are in any doubt, do not use them. This guide aims to help you understand the new changes and the impact they may have on you and your organisation, and seeks to explain the standards in a clear way. The old slip resistance markings of SRA, SRB and SRC no longer exist. This is because slip resistance has been deemed such a crucial feature of safety footwear, and it is now considered mandatory and will not carry a mark. There is an option for an additional slip test to be carried out, which will be marked with an SR symbol. The slip resistance test has also changed in the way it is carried out – now on a ceramic tile surface not a steel plate, and using different lubricants. Also, the heel and forepart of the boot will be tested, not the flat. Water resistant symbols changed: Size for size, no other ladder safety devices or accessories provide the level of safety or versatility of Ladder Grips. The key feature of Ladder Grips that make it so powerful in improving ladder safety, is the formulation of the rubber pad combined with the design of the product, for best results clean pads with soapy water or similar then dry prior to use. Now – as the safety footwear standards have already been published, all new products will be tested to the new standards, and so will carry the new codes. Are the 2011 standards still relevant? For a comprehensive guide to the new standards and how these updates could affect you, read our blog here and get access to our whitepaper for a clear and jargon-busting explanation of all the safety footwear standard updates) The facts

Most ladder safety devices available on the market concentrate on trying to fix the ladder feet whereas Ladder Grips secures the top of the ladder. If the top is made immobile, the feet are unlikely to move. Don’t work within 6 m horizontally of any overhead power line, unless it has been made dead or it is protected with insulation. Use a non-conductive ladder (eg fibreglass or timber) for any electrical work

8. Timing

Changes have been made in a number of areas – ranging from the requirements that footwear must meet to the test methods themselves. This also means that some standards have been revoked. Telescopic ladders are a variation of leaning ladders but remember that they don’t all work in the same way. The old symbol of WRU (meaning water-resistant uppers) has been replaced by a new code of WPA – meaning water penetration and absorption. Scuff cap abrasion resistance test added: You may be asking, why have the standards been updated? Well, it is hoped that the changes will make for more precise testing and clearer marking of safety footwear that reflects more realistic real-world conditions and modern materials. Big Grip can be used on level ground to help prevent outward slip of ladder base with its large, grippy footprint area of over 480sq inches ( 24ins long x 20ins wide).

Ladder rungs are specifically designed at an angle so they become level and provide stability when the ladder is put at the correct angle against a surface, but a lot of these types of fixed ladders have rungs which are round barred, with no angled flat surface or grip."

What are the most important changes of the new standards?

Can be used on sloping ground (uphill or downhill, up to 1 in 3). Pivoting adjuster enables ladder footplate to remain level on ground which is up to 8" lower at one end than the other. Don’t stand and work on the top three steps (including a step forming the very top of the stepladder) unless there is a suitable handhold To help make sure the ladder angle is at the safest position to work from- you should use the 1-in-4 rule. This is where the ladder should be one space or unit of measurement out for every four spaces or units up (a 75° angle)

Ensure that the ladder rungs are clean and free of loose paint etc. Wipe the rungs with a suitable solvent cleaner to remove any grease and similar dirt likely to prevent a suitable adhesion. As a rough guide you will need approximately 1 Tube for 4 X 400mm lengths. Custom sizes cut for FREE! There is a new test for the durability of the scuff cap, intended to establish its capabilities of protecting the toecap. This has a symbol of SC if it is passed (after 1,000 abrasion cycles). Ladder grip test added: Other protection levels that already includes requirements for nail protection are not stated as before, as the protection level itself already states that the product meets these requirements. However, it is interesting to know what type of nail protection that is included in the product. For example, protection class S3 (requirement for nail protection is included in that protection class) is therefore divided into the following three levels - S3, S3L and S3S.

PS means the footwear was tested with a nail 3mm in diameter, and is relevant for risks such as sewing needles or hypodermic needles. Apply a 6mm diameter bead of the PU230 adhesive down the middle of each internal surface of the "Ladder Grip" profiles. do not apply Adhesive to more than 5 "Ladder Grips" at a time. Ladder Grips are manufactured in the UK from welded 2 mm steel with a powder coating and non-ferrous fittings to maximise strength and durability. The special natural rubber ladder pads are fixed to the steel and provide the grip necessary to keep the ladder stable. Our unique GRP (fibreglass) slip resistant ladder rung covers are designed to fit over the Round or Square rungs of fire escapes, service ladders and the majority of other ladders available.
